Diagnosis and Treatment

Cancer is an abnormal, continuous multiplying of cells. The cells divide uncontrollably and may grow into adjacent tissue or spread to distant parts of the body. The mass of cancer cells eventually becomes large enough to produce tumors that can be detected.

Tumors can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors are not cancerous and can usually be removed. Malignant tumors are cancerous, can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs, and metastasize (break away from a primary malignant tumor) to form secondary tumors in other parts of the body. The cancer is named for the primary site of origin, such as skin, colon, or breast, even if it has spread to another location in the body. When cancer is detected early in its course, while it is localized to its primary location, it is much more feasible to remove or destroy the tumor and slow the course of the disease.

Diagnosis

If signs or symptoms of cancer are present, it is important that you visit your physician as soon as possible. Your physician may recommend diagnostic tests including imaging (radiology or X-ray), blood analysis or other laboratory tests as well as conducting a thorough physical examination. A diagnosis of cancer will identify the type of cancer and the extent or stage of the cancer.

Treatment

Treatment for cancer varies by the type and stage of the cancer. Surgery may be an option to remove all or part of the tumor. Radiation therapy  and chemotherapy are typically used to eliminate the cancer cells inside the body. Promising gene therapies and other treatments are in the experimental stage.

Radiation and chemotherapy are usually administered over a course of months. The period of treatment poses emotional and physical challenges for patients and their families. Comprehensive cancer care includes providing patients, and their families, with information and support during their course of treatment. Patients can also benefit from participation in clinical trials tests of new medications or treatments that have not yet been approved for general use.
