Virtual Colonoscopy

CT Colonoscopy - Patient Instructions
In preparation for your CT Colonoscopy procedure you need to follow these instructions and
the instructions listed in more detail on the packet.

Preparation Supplies
You will need to pick up the following at Renown X-ray and Imaging at So. McCarran
6630 So. McCarran C-27:

  • LoSo Prep -1
  •  - Laxative to cleanse your digestive tract.
  • Tagitol - 1
  •  - To mark any remaining stool.
It is essential that you follow all the instructions in the kit.  If the bowel is not sufficiently clean your exam will need to be rescheduled.

Two days prior to your test:
Start a low residue diet.  Start with breakfast 48 hours prior to your exam.

The low - residue diet consist of the following:

Beverages - clear liquids (water, coffee, tea, broth, orange or grape punch (not juice) clear JELL-O, 7-UP.
Strained fruit juices - (orange, apple, grape)
Cereal - Rice Krispies, Farina, Cream of Wheat.
Eggs - Any style
Cottage Cheese - (Dry, not creamed)
Meat - Canned baby meats, baked skinless fish, finely chopped canned tuna
Macaroni - Spaghetti, noodles, rice.
Oil, butter or margarine
Sweets & Sugars - plain gelatin desserts without added ingredients, moderate amounts of sugar or strained honey.
Seasonings - moderate amounts

NO breads
NO fruits or vegetables
NO milk or milk products or artificial milk products
NO alcoholic beverages

5:30 pm:  Mix Lo-So prep magnesium citrate according to the package instructions.  Only mix ½ the powder in 8oz of water (use a 16 oz or larger cup) at a time.  Mix slowly and wait for fizzing to stop before adding remaining amount of powder.
6:00 pm:  8 oz. glass of water
7:00 pm:  8 oz. glass of water
7:30 pm:  Take Lo-So Bisacodyl tablets according to the package instructions.
8:00 pm:  8 oz. glass of water
9:00 pm:  8 oz. glass of water


One Day Prior to your test:
Note:  Be sure to drink all water/fluids as instructed.  Do not use milk, cream or non-dairy creamer.

Breakfast:  Clear soup (any broth) strained fruit without pulp, flavored gelatin that is not red  (do not add extra ingredients), soft drinks, black coffee, and plain tea.
                      1 bottle of Tagitol

Lunch (Noon): Clear soup (any broth) strained fruit without pulp, flavored gelatin that is not red (do not add extra ingredients) soft drinks, black coffee, and plain tea.
                           1 bottle of Tagitol

1:00 pm:  8 oz. glass of water
2:00 pm:  8 oz glass of water
3:00 pm:  8 oz glass of water
4:00 pm:  8 oz glass of water

Dinner (5:00 pm):  Clear soup (any broth) strained fruit without pulp, flavored gelatin that is not red (do not add extra ingredients), soft drinks, black coffee and plain tea.
                                  1 bottle of Tagitol

After 9:00 pm:  NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK

The day of your test:  DO NOT EAT OF DRINK ANYTHING.

At least 2 hours before your examination unwrap the foil from the Bisacodyl suppository and discard foil.  Insert the suppository and follow the package instructions.  Retain the suppository at least 15 minutes before evacuating.
