Ben & Jerry's Grand Opening at Renown Regional|
RENO, Nev. (May 29, 2008) – The Shops at Renown, a new retail initiative designed to provide an outlet to patients and visitors, will welcome Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream to Renown Regional Medical Center with a grand opening celebration, Friday, May 30, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., in the hospital’s Center for Advanced Medicine C, 1155 Mill Street.
With free ice cream provided to children, the Pediatric Unit will be one of many departments to benefit. During the ice cream delivery to the pediatrics unit at 2p.m., the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cart will roll through the hallways distributing cones to children. On average 110 pediatric patients each month will receive an ice cream voucher provided by Ben & Jerry’s.
A company leader in producing wide varieties of super-premium ice cream and ice cream novelties, Ben & Jerry’s is the latest retail operation to open this year at Renown Regional. Last month, Longs Drugs opened at the hospital.
“Feeling better quickly involves more than the traditional idea of medicine and hospitals,” said Phyllis Freyer, vice president of marketing and communications for Renown Health. “Welcoming a retail store like Ben & Jerry’s complements our brand platform of skill and expertise. Ben & Jerry’s has been improving the quality of life of its customers for more than 30 years. Our partnership is a benefit that reflects our mission of making a genuine difference for the many lives we touch.”
There are emotional benefits for patients, spouses, children and other family members to just escape and focus on something other than illness or injury, she said. Ben & Jerry’s as well as the other Shops at Renown may be another way to help people cope with stress and celebrate life.
"There is no question that comfort food like ice cream is helpful to many people during stressful times," said Yolanda Ortega-Gammill, registered dietician with Renown Health Management Services. "The hospital can be a difficult time for everyone. It's easy to feel that events are spiraling out of our personal control, but for most people, food choices are among the few things we usually can have control over.”
“Everyone should feel free to enjoy the foods that comfort them. By not overindulging, people can do much toward keeping control of their health as well," Ortega-Gammill said.
Freyer also emphasized that The Shops at Renown dovetail nicely with the hospital’s vision of a healing environment.
"Each person identifies with his or her environment differently," she said. "It's essential to the healing process that a patient's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs are honored while they are recuperating. The same goes for the patient’s family who visit. It is nice to have various amenities close by so they can be with their family at any given moment. Yet there is that element of just having to get away and find some space to meet personal needs."
Speaking of the partnership with Ben & Jerry’s, Ben Larson, vice president and director of operations for Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops, said Renown Regional is one of only three hospitals nationwide that will maintain this type of partnership.
“Renown Health is an early-adopter of innovative treatments, programs and services,” he said. “There is not another hospital within a 500-mile radius that has a full-service ice cream and smoothie store partnered on its campus.”
Ben & Jerry’s at Renown Regional will be open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
