Renown Health offers a variety of low-cost health screenings|
RENO, Nev. (April 21, 2009) – Recognizing the importance of preventive care, Renown Health is offering low-cost health screenings for people of all ages. These screenings offer everyone the opportunity to get checked and detect risk for possible illness.
“We believe when people have knowledge about their health, it gives them the power to make positive changes,” said Lori Mitchell, Renown Health, Health Management Services manager. “With early detection and proper follow-up, conditions can be treated. Taking part of preventative screenings could help save a life.”
Renown Health will be offering children’s health education on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tune In To Kids at Idlewild Park. Kids will have the opportunity to learn how to check their heart rate and learn how heart rate changes after different activities. This activity teaches kids to be aware of their heart and how to maintain a healthy heart.
Vascular Screenings – According to the American Heart Association, more than 10 million Americans have undetected peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the build up of fatty deposits in the lining of the leg’s arteries. Renown Health offers a noninvasive screening to detect PAD by measuring the blood pressure in the arms and legs. This $25 vascular screening helps detect risks of heart attack and stroke.
Renown Health is the first health network in the western United States to adopt this FDA-approved device. The 20-minute screening is available at several Renown Medical Group locations. Results are sent via a secure Internet connection to a vascular specialist for interpretation. To schedule a screening, call 775-982-2270.
FIT Home Screening Kit – FIT stands for fecal immunochemical test. This screening detects cancers and polyps more successfully than older and more widely used stool-screening tests. Key patient benefits of the test include:
Higher sensitivity resulting in fewer false readings
More convenient for patients because it is easy to prepare and complete in the privacy of your own home
No dietary restrictions required
According to the American Cancer Society, Nevada has one of the lowest compliance rates of colorectal cancer screenings. In 2004, only 36.7 percent of state residents over the age of 50 underwent screening, compared to 45.1 percent nationwide. Colon cancer has a 90 percent survival rate if caught early; with increased screening compliance, it is very possible to reduce cancer rates in the state.
FIT home screening kits are offered for just $35, with no physician referral required. To request a kit call 775-982-6830.
