Laparoscopic Treatment Provides Hope for Liver Cancer
RENO, Nev. (April 27, 2009) – Christos Galanopoulos, M.D., a gastrointestinal surgical oncologist with General & Vascular Associates, was the first surgeon in the western U.S. to successfully laparoscopicly remove non-resectable (not able to be removed surgically) liver tumors using a new microwave ablation treatment.
Dr. Galanopoulos joins a list of leading surgeons world-wide and Renown Regional Medical Center, where the procedure was completed, joins a group of elite hospitals offering the procedure. Other hospitals include John Hopkins Hospital and Health System in Baltimore, Md., The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, N.Y.
The American Cancer Society estimated that 18,510 people would be diagnosed with liver cancer in the United States during 2006. According to liver cancer statistics, 1 out of 153 people born today will be diagnosed with liver cancer at some point in their lifetime.
Microwave Tissue Ablation (MTA) is a new technique for the coagulation of soft tissue in open surgery. The technology, where microwave energy is transmitted through the tip of a surgical probe, is being used by the world's best liver surgeons to treat liver cancers.
"I am pleased to be a part of this leading technology,” said Christos Galanopoulos, M.D. with General & Vascular Associates. “The MTA System has proven itself as an important additional tool for liver surgeries. Its simplicity, power and speed make it ideal for delivering fast large spherical coagulations in conjunction with other intra-operative procedures."
The system, designed and manufactured by Acculis Limited, a UK microwave ablation company, was first distributed to a cohort of the world's leading cancer centers. The roll out is now being extended through the recruitment of distributors in several European countries as well as in South America and Asia.
MTA is the only FDA 510(k) cleared single needle high power microwave system. The MTA system surpasses contemporary low power microwave systems, which require complex multiple needle placements and longer times to achieve equivalent coagulations.
The speed and predictability of MTA means that the desired coagulation zone can be consistently and decisively achieved. This means in the short time taken to create large coagulations, many more sites can be coagulated within a given operative window. The simplicity of the system ensures that removals can be performed during open procedures without placing complex additional equipment management demands on the operative team.
Acculis is a specialist medical device company developing microwave energy ablation systems for oncology applications. Acculis is part of the Microsulis group of companies. Microsulis and Acculis are based in Hampshire, England. For more information about the Acculis MTA System, visit http://www.acculis.com, http://www.microsulis.com.
