(June 1, 2009) – Linda Ferris, Ph.D., Renown Health’s vice president of cancer services, will be appointed as the new chair for a Member Organization Steering Committee for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). The 46-member committee, which serves as a subcommittee of the Executive Committee, directs the activities of the national member organization representatives and is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating strategies to support enhanced collaborations and communications with CoC member organizations throughout the country.

In her three-year position, Ferris will develop effective strategies to enhance partnerships, expand collaborative activities, and improve communications with member organizations. She will also plan the annual meeting of member organization representatives and facilitate the orientation and mentorship programs for new member organization representatives.
Additional responsibilities include the development, distribution and review of the annual Cancer Care Initiatives report submitted by each member organization and determines appropriate mechanisms for dissemination and utilization of the information.
“Dr. Ferris is the ideal candidate to optimize the cancer services that Renown Health continues to provide for our community,” said Ron Laxton, MSN, RN, Administrator, Renown Regional. “Her role with the Commission is well-deserved and will further enhance renown’s partnerships with other well-established doctors and cancer centers.”
Multidisciplinary membership of the CoC is comprised of 97 individuals who are either surgeons representing the American College of Surgeons or representatives from the 42 national, professional organizations affiliated with the CoC. These individuals each participate in one of the standing committees or in one of the 13 Disease Site Teams that work to pursue the Commission's goals by:
Establishing standards for 1,433 Commission-Approved Cancer Programs and evaluating and accrediting programs according to those standards
Overseeing a nationwide network of more than 1,600 physician-volunteers who provide state and local support for Commission and American Cancer Society cancer control initiatives; providing oversight and coordination for educational programs of the Commission, which are geared towards surgeons, physicians, cancer registrars, cancer program administrators, and others
Providing clinical oversight and expertise for Commission standard-setting activities and for the development, review and dissemination of patient care guidelines
Overseeing and coordinating national site-specific studies of patterns of care and outcomes of patient management through the annual collection, analysis and dissemination of data for all cancer sites
Renown Health originally hired Ferris in July of 2007. Since then, she has lead cancer care operations and oncology service development throughout the health network. Specifically, she is responsible for directing the operations, finance, business development and planning of the Renown Institute for Cancer (the region’s only hospital in the area conducting clinical trials with the National Cancer Institute).
In addition, she integrates service delivery with medical specialties, develops business relationships with private companies, state and federal agencies, assist in securing grants and contracts related to cancer services and coordinates quality and service standards with medical and administrative management to optimize patient care.
In less than two years, Ferris’ initiative has helped bring two da Vinci® S HD™ Robotic Surgical Systems and the new TomoTherapy Hi-Art® System to Reno. The two advanced technologies are changing the way cancer patients are treated – with less pain, shorter treatments and quicker recovery times. Ferris has also helped establish Renown Health as a destination for cancer treatment and a center for excellence that cancer centers throughout the west are modeling.
Prior to her position with Renown, Ferris served as executive director, Oncology and Surgical Services at Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) in Annapolis, Md. During her tenure there, Ferris completed a comprehensive strategic plan for Oncology that included the launch of a multidisciplinary da Vinci Robotics Surgical program, which encompassed general surgery, thoracic surgery, gynecological oncology, urology and surgical oncology.
She played a prominent role in executing a Cancer Research Affiliation agreement with the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins for the DeCesaris Cancer Institute at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Ferris also successfully completed a Certificate of Need for the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Vision 2010 tower expansion. The tower expansion included the addition of 50 beds, eight operating rooms, expansion of the Medical Center’s emergency department and infrastructure departments, including laboratory, pathology, materials management, and food service. Ferris was a key member of the team that advanced AAMC’s Breast Center and clinical trials programs to a level of national prominence.
