A Sasse Guide: Outpatient Weight-Loss Surgery, Safe and Successful Weight Loss with Modern Bariatric Surgery
RENO Nev. (August 13, 2009) – Local surgeon Kent Sasse, MD, MPH, FACS, recently authored "Outpatient Weight Loss Surgery, A Sasse Guide: Outpatient Weight-Loss Surgery, Safe and Successful Weight Loss with Modern Bariatric Surgery," a book detailing the different options of bariatric surgery. The book includes information on the preparation a patient needs for bariatric surgery, and how to maximize success with exercise and dietary plans. It also discusses screenings, prevention and treatment for other medical problems associated with obesity.
In the book, Dr. Sasse, a surgeon with Western Bariatric Institute, used many first-hand experiences at Renown Health as examples for readers to explore.
"There is definitely input from Renown employees in the book," said Dr. Sasse. "I've had the great pleasure to work with the nurses and surgical techs in the operating rooms at Renown Regional, and they've become masters of their part in this procedure."
Dr. Sasse has been a part of the bariatric surgery program at Renown Health since its inception nine years ago. The program is available at Renown Regional Medical Center as well as Renown South Meadows Medical Center – a Blue Distinction® Center for Bariatric Surgery from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Among the chapters of the book are testimonials from patients, including several from Renown Health. Dr. Sasse said he believes Renown’s bariatric program is comparable to the top centers in the country when it comes to weight loss surgery.
"It is just like any center that becomes excellent at some given area by virtue of the high volume and having really good people to help it run,” said Dr. Sasse. “It's the outstanding people at Renown that have created the success we’ve had in the operating room."
Dr. Sasse also praised the recovery room nurses for "getting accustomed to the special needs and concerns of patients with weight loss surgery."
In addition to the general public, Dr. Sasse wrote the book for physicians, nurses and dietitians.
"At every level of healthcare, we are interacting more and more with people struggling with obesity, and the number of people considering weight loss surgery is increasing," Dr. Sasse said. "So, I think this book has a lot of relevance for clinicians, just as it is a resource for patients who have questions."
Dr. Sasse said he wanted the book to have the most up-to-date and accurate information on this rapidly developing field of weight loss surgery.
"This book is really the only resource out there for this type of minimally invasive surgery," said Dr. Sasse. "So many of my patients ask what the best resource is for them, what book would be best to find out about this surgery. Over time, I purchased all of them, from good expert sources, but still didn't find one that was a non-biased, fair look at the pros and cons of weight loss surgery, or that captured the current changes that have taken place."
"Outpatient Weight Loss Surgery, A Sasse Guide: Outpatient Weight-Loss Surgery, Safe and Successful Weight Loss with Modern Bariatric Surgery," is available at The Boutique at Renown Regional Medical Center, as well as amazon.com, iMetabolic.com and local retailers.
