Leading the Way in Stroke Care

Nevada’s first Primary Stroke Center Certification
Renown Health Comprehensive Stroke Center is the first in Nevada—and one of only 192 nationwide—to earn the Gold Seal of Approval® for stroke care by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the nation’s largest healthcare standards-setting and accrediting body. The Joint Commission awarded Renown Comprehensive Stroke Center its Primary Stroke Center Certification.

“Joint Commission certification signifies that Renown's Comprehensive Stroke Center complies with the highest national standards for healthcare safety and quality of care,” said Paul M. Katz, MD, medical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center. “The Stroke Quality Improvement team at Renown Regional Medical Center should be credited for its hard work and commitment to quality in earning this distinctive recognition."

This Gold Seal of Approval designates Renown as the regional leader in providing stroke prevention education and treatment –including outreach to our rural community partners. The Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on a rigorous, daylong, on-site review of Renown's Stroke Center and recognizes the center’s exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke patients. Nationally each year about 700,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. It is the nation’s third leading cause of death and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center provides the latest treatment options and works to educate the entire northern Nevada community on stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. In addition, the Stroke Center has been nationally recognized as a model for other communities for its work to bring faster treatment to stroke patients in rural areas.

“This certification not only helps raise public awareness about the work of the center, but it also helps raise the bar for other hospitals across the country,” Katz said. “Stroke is a major public health problem, and this certification shows that Renown is addressing it in a systematic way that can be replicated by other hospitals.”
