Gynecologic Oncology
The Institute for Cancer at Renown Regional Medical Center is the only health provider in Northern Nevada to offer a Gynecologic Oncology Program. Dr. Peter Lim, Medical Director of this program affectionately referred to as "The Center of Hope," specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs - specifically, cancer of the ovary, endometrium, uterus, cervix, vagina, vulva and trophoblastic disease.
"Rather than asking patients to travel all over for their various treatments," explains Dr. Lim, "we centralized the services in one location, enabling us to work as a unified team."
Mayo trained, Dr. Lim brings a significant level of skill, knowledge and experience previously available only in major metropolitan areas. He is part of a highly select group of approximately 400 board-certified gynecologic oncologists nationwide. These physicians are members of the national research organization Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), which is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Lim is a shining light among our extraordinary team of physicians. The Gynecologic Oncology program is a hallmark of excellence in patient care at Renown. It has had such dramatic impact, it draws patients from all over the western United States, including Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah and California.
da Vinci treatments for Gynecologic Cancer
With advancements in medical technology, new treatments enable patients to return to daily activities more quickly. Thanks to these recent technologies, patients have faster recovery times, smaller incisions and lower risks of infection.
In northern Nevada, Renown Regional Medical Center is the first and most experienced provider of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System for gynecological surgeries. Renown Health is committed to meeting the medical needs of the community, providing the latest in skill, expertise and technology.
da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System can be used for the following gynecological surgeries:
- Hysterectomy to treat uterine diseases such as cancer, fibroids, prolapse, and endometriosis by removing the uterus. The surgery may also include the removal of the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, lymph nodes and part of the vagina, depending on the procedure and the disease being treated.
- Sacrocolpopexy to correct uterine or vaginal vault prolapse (when weak connective tissue and muscles can no longer support the vagina or uterus).
- Myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids, or uterine tumors, and reconstruct the uterus, giving patients the opportunity of having future pregnancies.
