EARLY DETECTION IS THE KEY
Many physicians believe that the earlier lung cancer is caught, the better the chance for survival.  Because early stage lung cancer has no symptoms, it's best if people are screened with the very latest technology - the type you can find at Renown Institute for Cancer.

Renown is committed to cancer research and this innovative screening is now a clinical trial - one that may change the preventive treatment for future lung cancer patients.

About This Clinical Trial
The Lung Cancer Screening Study, which is also a clinical trial, may help improve the screening procedure for lung cancer so it can be detected at an earlier and more curable stage.

Previously, a chest X-ray was the most common approach to diagnosing lung cancer. Although this method could detect dime-size abnormalities, they were often missed until they were much larger. Unfortunately, the disease was often in an advanced stage. At Renown, a CT scan is used. These imaging machines can detect masses almost 10 times smaller than a conventional X-ray (about the size of a grain of rice). Caught this early, lung cancer can be treated more successfully.

The Program Directors
Doctors Stephen Baez, MD, and Leslie Smith, MD, are the leaders of this new clinical trial. Together they represent Pulmonary Medicine Associates and are the expertise behind this unique community program.

Who Should Be Screened?
To be eligible for the Lung Cancer Screening Study, an individual must be:
   Age 40+
   A current or former smoker
An individual with at least a 10-pack per year history of smoking, that is one pack of cigarettes per day for 10 years or two packs per day for five years

How to Enroll
Call 866-513-8227 to arrange a free eligibility assessment. You will be asked a series of questions over the phone to determine if you fit the program criteria.

Once you have been selected as a candidate for the clinical trial, the Cancer Research Office at Renown Institute for Cancer will schedule an appointment with a research nurse to review the study with you in more detail and answer any additional questions you may have. The research nurse will then work with you to schedule an appointment for your CT screening.  The scan costs $95 and takes less than an hour. Within 1-2 weeks after the screening, a nurse will contact you with the results of your CT scan. Depending on your results, you may be referred to a lung specialist at Pulmonary Medicine Associates. Additional CT scans or a lung biopsy may also be recommended. As a participant in the clinical trial, your health and progress will be monitored for five years, regardless of your screening results. You will be contacted by phone or mail approximately every 6-12 months to inquire about your health.

Quit to Live
Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer and is responsible for 87 percent of all lung cancer cases. The best way to avoid cancer is to stop smoking. So if you do currently smoke and need help quitting, Renown offers a support program designed to help you kick the habit.

Please call 775-982-5073 for information about our stop smoking program.

Committed to Cancer Research
Renown Institute for Cancer believes in advancing cancer research. A clinical trial is one of the final stages of the long and careful cancer research process. The main purpose of a clinical trial is to determine whether promising approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment are safe and effective. During the past 22 years, Renown Institute for Cancer has administered more than 141 cancer clinical trials with over 870 participants.
