Technology
To look at the highly advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities available at Renown Institute for Cancer is to effectively peer into the future.
Our goal is to utilize the absolute latest in state-of-the-art technology to implement the therapies of tomorrow today.
We're delivering treatments that are not only more efficient in detecting and destroying cancer cells, but are much more gentle to the patient. It is this approach to smarter, patient-centered medicine that truly defines us.
TomoTherapy® TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® System allows physicians to see tumors in 3D at the time of the procedure, using a CT scan. This improves the precision of the treatment, targeting the tumor directly. The Hi-Art® system delivers radiation in tens of thousands of beamlets in a spiral pattern (360°) around the tumor. This gives doctors more control over the location and dose of therapy allowing them to treat only the cancerous tumors, sparing healthy tissue and other surrounding critical structures, reducing both short-term and long-term patient side effects.
da Vinci Robotic Surgical System da Vinci Robotic Surgical System combines the skills of a surgeon with computer-enhanced technology and robotics. Seated at a console, the surgeon operates via robot, which provides a magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgical site through a camera 10 times more powerful than the human eye. Key patient benefits include reduced trauma to the body, quicker recovery, significantly less blood loss, lower risk of infection, reduced scarring and less post-surgery pain.
High-Dose Radiation - Brachytherapy High-dose radiation (HDR) brachytherapy is a pioneering new therapy in the treatment of cervical, endometrial, vaginal, and prostate cancers. This amazing innovation employs the use of cesium - 137 where radioactive material that is placed via catheter directly into or near tumor sites. The exposure eliminates the cancer while sparing surrounding tissue.
MRI Breast Biopsy MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy allows doctors to biopsy lumps or concerning masses that do not show up on traditional ultrasound or mammogram. MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy may be suitable for patients where an ultrasound, mammogram, and physical exam are inconclusive or unclear, patients that have scare tissue, and patients that have silicone or non-silicone implants or dense breasts.
SAVI Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) The SAVI, which was approved by the FDA in 2006, is a breast radiation device that can be custom-fitted to your lumpectomy cavity, regardless of what shape or size it may be. This device is a bundle of soft, tiny catheters. The SAVI is inserted through a small incision, and the catheter bundle expands uniformly, but its unique design allows it to be opened in a way that truly conforms to the size and shape of your tumor cavity. The radiation dose can be individually controlled through each catheter, allowing precise targeting by the radiation oncologist.
Other Leading-Edge Radiation Therapy Techniques Renown offers the absolute latest radiation therapies that are improving the prognosis for cancer and reducing the side effects to healthy tissue. We offer both Linear Accelerator External Beam Therapy as well as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy to combat tumors with exceptionally precise external beam radiotherapy treatments.
PET/CT Scanning Another astonishing breakthrough technology offered exclusively at Renown is PET/CT scanning. With one quick, safe scan physicians and radiologists can now view a patient's complete picture - both structural and metabolic. PET/CT enables doctors to find cancer earlier and pinpoint the location and extent of the disease for the most effective treatment plan possible.
Through the advent of these new technologies, treatment regimens that used to last for months, can now take a day or two. And more and more of a patient's time is spent out of the hospital and back at home with loved ones. Which, we know, is the bedrock of all healing.
