Renown Health Pathway Designated

How We Continuously Improve

One quality initiative at Renown is Transformational Healthcare. This is an approach to our daily work based on Toyota manufacturing principles that puts the patient at the center of care and the team members at the center of the improvement process.

Renown Health Home CareIt emphasizes the patient perspective and eliminates waste and inefficiencies by engaging staff and physicians in continuous improvement.

This same approach is prescribed by Virginia Mason Medical Center and many others.

Over the past decade, many leading healthcare institutions across the nation have adopted these principles with great success.

Patient Involvement is Key

You are an integral part of our efforts to provide quality care. Here are a few tips when visiting your doctor or hospital:

Speak Up

Ask your care team about medications, treatments and procedures. No concern is too small. Here are 10 questions to ask your doctor provided by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality:

  1. What is the test for?
  2. How many times have you done this procedure?
  3. When will I get the results?
  4. Why do I need this treatment?
  5. Are there any alternatives?
  6. What are the possible complications?
  7. Which hospital is best for my needs?
  8. How do you spell the name of that drug?
  9. Are there any side effects?
  10.  Will this medicine interact with medicines that I'm already taking?

Prepare for Your Appointment

  1. Ask someone to go to your appointment with you to help you understand and remember answers to your questions.
  2. Create a health history that includes your current conditions and past surgeries or illnesses. Bring it to your appointment.
  3. Know your family’s health history, such as your parents’ health conditions.
  4. Bring all your medicines with you.

Transparency and Communication with Your Care Team

  1. It’s critically important for patients to speak openly about their health history. This discussion helps your care provider to diagnose you accurately.
  2. Patients have the right to be informed about the benefits and risks of any treatment.
