Renown Health Is Nationally Recognized for Its Commitment To Providing High-Quality Heart Failure Care With Three American Heart Failure Recognitions

Renown Health Cardiology has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® - Heart Failure Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to improving outcomes for patients with heart failure, meaning reduced readmissions and more healthy days at home. The heart care team also received Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. About 6 million U.S. adults are living with heart failure (HF), a number that is expected to increase to more than 8 million by 2030. Despite the name, HF doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working – it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there’s no cure for HF, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes. The Get With The Guidelines - Heart Failure quality achievement award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association. Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. The program aims to increase healthy days at home and reduce hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. “Renown Health is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Jayson Morgan, MD, Director of Cardiovascular Services at Renown Health. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in northern Nevada can experience longer, healthier lives.” Each year, program participants qualify for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for HF patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also provide education to patients to help them manage their HF at home. “We are pleased to recognize the leaders and teams at Renown Health for a strong commitment to caring for people with heart failure,” said Clyde W. Yancy, MD, MSc, MACC, FAHA, MACP, FHFSA, national chairperson of the American Heart Association Heart Failure systems of care advisory group and chief, division of cardiology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. “Hospitals that participate in Get With The Guidelines quality improvement programs often see better patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and communities.” Renown Health is also recognized on the American Heart Association’s Target: Heart FailureSM Honor Roll. Hospitals on the Honor Roll meet specific criteria that improves medication adherence, provides early follow-up care and coordination and enhances patient education. The goal is to further reduce hospital readmissions and help patients improve their quality of life in managing this chronic condition. Renown Health additionally received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll™ award. Target: Type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart disease or stroke. 56 Anesthesiologists Join Renown Health to Provide High Quality Services to Area Patients and Surgeons

Innovative anesthesiology practice improves diagnosis, medical management and quality of life for patient. If you are preparing for a surgical procedure, you have probably given a lot of thought to the education, training and experience of the surgeon performing the procedure. But you may not have thought much about the physician anesthesiologist or the importance of his or her medical expertise in your procedure — before, during and after — to keep you safe and comfortable. "Our leadership team has thought a lot about physician anesthesiologists over the past year,” says Sy Johnson, MBA, President and Chief of Staff for Renown Health. “As the region’s only not-for-profit integrated healthcare network and trauma center, we are trusted and chosen by patients as the top provider of inpatient care, including surgeries, for northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. To serve the needs of hundreds of surgeons and thousands of patients with safe, high quality and effective anesthesia coverage, we now employ fifty-six anesthesiologists through our Department of Surgery and have established Renown Medical Group Anesthesiology, a new local practice for northern Nevada.” “Renown Medical Group anesthesiologists provide 24 hour surgical and procedural coverage based on clinical skill sets, surgeon preference and patient preference. Patients who choose Renown for their care can feel certain that they are receiving anesthesia care from a physician anesthesiologist who has attained board certification. Renown Health hospitals are pleased to provide patient care exclusively by physician anesthesiologists,” says Thomas Graf, MD, FAAFP, CEO, Chief Clinical & Quality Officer of Renown Health and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “We are the doctors trained to administer and manage anesthesia given to a patient during a surgical procedure to ensure anesthesia care is as safe and effective as possible,” says Nariman Rahimzadeh, MD. Dr. Rahimzadeh serves as Medical Director and Chief of Staff for Renown South Meadows Medical Center, is a member of the new group and has practiced in Reno for fifteen years. “We also play a key role in taking care of patients who are having minor surgery or who may not require general anesthesia, such as women in labor who need to be awake and alert but require effective pain management.” “Our innovative anesthesiology practice is now staffed by fifty-six anesthesiologists. We are serving patients and surgeons at Renown Health hospitals with one fully integrated model of care to improve diagnosis, medical management and quality of life,” says Christos Galanopoulos, MD, MBA, MSc, FACS; Chair, Department of Surgery and Vice President at Renown Health. “We strive to advance anesthesia through clinical excellence, education, innovation and people. Our nationally recognized medical staff and dedicated support team perform the majority of anesthesia procedures in our market, and evaluate, monitor, and supervise patient care before, during, and after surgery to deliver effective anesthesia and ensure optimal patient safety.” “Physician anesthesiologists have 12 to 14 years of education, including medical school, and 12,000 to 16,000 hours of clinical training,” adds Scott Parkhill, MD, FASA, who serves as a Medical Director and Vice Chief of Staff at Renown Regional Medical Center and is a member of the new group. “Physician anesthesiologists in the United States complete a four-year undergraduate college degree that includes satisfying pre-med requirements. Like other medical doctors, they must follow undergraduate education with four years of medical school. After medical school, a physician specializing in anesthesiology completes a four-year anesthesiology residency program. Following completion of a residency program, residents are eligible to sit for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) exam. We are pleased that all of our Renown Medical Group anesthesiologists are board certified.” Adds Kelsey Larsen, MBA, Chief Operating Officer for Renown Medical Group, “We are thrilled to welcome and employ forty-two physician anesthesiologists who started with us on April 1. An additional nine physicians joined last week and five other physicians have requested to start over the summer for a total of 56 anesthesiologists that have joined Renown Health to provide services to patients.” Patients served include those at Renown Regional Medical Center, the only Level II Trauma Center between Sacramento and Salt Lake City, and named #1 Hospital in the State of Nevada by U.S. News and World Report Best Hospital Rankings for 2021. Physician anesthesiologists will also provide services to patients at Renown South Meadows Medical Center, named #1 Best Hospital for 2020 by U.S. News & World Report; and to patients at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital, northern Nevada’s only Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredited hospital, specializing in the treatment of patients with brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke. Renown Health is integrated with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Nevada’s first medical school, which serves to enhance the health of the community through increased access to care, innovative health care delivery, expansion of clinical research and training for the next generation of physicians and health care professionals. 51 ANESTHESIOLOGISTS WHO JOINED RENOWN IN APRIL 2022: Samuel Beck, MD Heber Becker, MD  Peter Billharz, MD  Kara Bjur, MD  Brian Brewer, MD Brian Buehler, MD Carrie Buehler, MD Catherine Burton, MD Joshua Cartinella, MD  Nicholas Cirac, MD  Gordon Curry, MD  Scott Dougan, MD  JoAnn Ellero, MD  Daryl Fenio, MD  Dirk Fletcher, MD  Tobey Gansert, MD  Benjamin Garol, MD  Jeffery Grudzinski, MD  Keith Hanson, MD  Min Hein, MD  Mark Janes, MD  Scott Jeannes, MD  Kevin Lasko, MD  Sarah Lim, MD  Jay Markin, MD John Marshall, MD  Eric Moody, MD  John Mortensen, MD  Jobin Nash, MD Mel Nutter, DO      Scott Parkhill, MD   Nariman Rahimzadeh, MD   Suresh Raman, MD   Shaina Richardson, MD   Alan Sarabia, MD   Heidi Sarabia, MD   Mitch Seman, MD   Daniel Sorensen, MD   Ryan Stites, MD   Aaron Wallace, MD   Duncan Browne, MD   Tyler Hartley, MD   Jie Lan, MD  Pamela Russell, MD  Scott Reineck, MD   Brian Landreth, DO      Kara Sievert, MD   Chiaki Nakanishi, MD  Philip Phu, MD  Matthew Sabatini, MD   Robert Kyper, MD  About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. Joining The Good Fight: Local Philanthropist Donates Significant Gift To Enhance Heart Health For Women

Donor establishes the Helaine Greenberg Women’s Heart Center at Renown Health Renown Health Foundation is delighted to announce a generous gift from Helaine Greenberg, a local philanthropist with a passion for helping to improve and strengthen women’s healthcare in northern Nevada. This gift will help establish the Helaine Greenberg Women’s Heart Center at Renown Health, located within the Heart & Vascular Institute. A first of its kind, the Center will offer specialized heart treatment for women in northern Nevada. Heart disease is the number one killer of women – claiming one life every minute – yet many women are unaware that the signs of a heart attack are different for women than they are for men. According to the American Heart Association journal, nearly 71% of women who have had heart attacks experienced unusual exhaustion in the weeks before, 50% had trouble sleeping and 42% suffered shortness of breath. Most importantly, about 43% had no chest pain. Thanks to this generous donation, women will now have the opportunity to receive exemplary care and education, from trusted providers at a convenient location. Helaine’s generosity comes from her heart, and with a passion for improving the lives – and health of women. We are deeply grateful for this transformative gift. The opening of this Center will continue our mission of making a genuine difference in the health and well-being of women- and all those who love them- and the communities we serve. “This generous gift allows us to provide specialized heart and vascular care to women who are pregnant, battling breast cancer, or having chest discomfort,” said Jayson Morgan, MD, Director of Cardiovascular Services. “There are millions of women living with or at risk of heart disease. It is crucial that we empower women to take charge of their heart health and teach everyone about the signs and symptoms of heart disease in women.” Led by Dr. Danish Atwal, the Helaine Greenberg Women’s Heart Center at Renown Health provides specific treatments, therapies, and education for women. Ms. Greenberg has been a consistent supporter of women’s healthcare. Just three years ago, she donated a large sum to support women and prevent breast cancer by establishing the Helaine Greenberg Breast Health Centers at Renown-2nd Street and Vista locations, named in her honor and providing screening services such as 3-D mammography, automated whole breast ultrasound and DEXA bone density scanning for osteoporosis. “Women’s health is so important to Helaine. Renown Health Foundation and our Renown Medical Group physicians and providers are grateful to fulfill her wish to help women who battle heart issues,” said Greg Walaitis, chief development officer. “Preventing and reducing chronic health conditions, and promoting health and wellness significantly improves the lives of women of all ages. We thank Helaine for her contributions as we continue to fight the good fight.” To learn more about Renown Health Foundation or to make a donation, please call 775-982-5545 or visit renown.org/give.   About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest local, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. Renown Now Offering rTMS Treatment for Major Depression

Treatment offers patients safe, non-drug and non-invasive repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) therapy to treat symptoms of major depression. Renown Health is committed to improving access to vital mental health services in northern Nevada. Today, clinical leaders at the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown announced they will offer repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) therapy for people experiencing Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) under the guidance of a Renown psychiatrist.  According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the U.S. The disease causes people to experience sadness and helplessness, and in some cases, may prevent people from carrying out their daily routines.  “We at Renown are proud of our national reputation as an innovator in implementing new models, technology and systems of care for our community,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President and CEO. “We are working to transform care and demonstrate value in a way that appeals to patients and helps clinicians improve outcomes and reduce costs. There is now a sufficient body of evidence to accept the analgesic and antidepressant effect of high-frequency rTMS, and we are pleased to offer this promising therapy.” rTMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. It is typically used when other depression treatments haven't been effective. This treatment for depression involves delivering repetitive magnetic pulses, so it's called repetitive TMS or rTMS. “Depression can be treated; however, for some people, medications and talking with a behavioral health expert may not be enough,” said Renown’s Division Chief of Behavioral Health, Richard A. Charlat, M.D., M.P.H. “We are pleased to offer rTMS therapy for people looking for a new way to fight depression and for whom other treatments may not have given them relief. We are committed to working closely with our patients to find the treatment that works best for them, so they can live their best lives.” “Nevada has the highest prevalence of mental illness and substance use in the nation,” said Steve Shell, vice president of the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute. “Combine that with the added stress and isolation many are feeling with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we know that offering patients safe, non-drug and non-invasive treatments- as well as essential mental health and addiction services are more important than ever.”   How rTMS Works During an rTMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the person’s scalp near their forehead. The electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the region of the person’s brain involved in mood control and depression. It's thought to activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity in depression. Though the biology of why rTMS works isn't completely understood, the stimulation appears to impact how the brain is working, which in turn seems to ease depression symptoms and improve mood. There are different ways to perform the procedure, and techniques may change as experts learn more about the most effective ways to perform treatments. On average, patients undergo rTMS treatments for four to six weeks, five days a week for about 40 minutes a day. In all cases, a patient’s doctor will determine a treatment plan that’s best for the patient. This video shows what patients can expect during rTMS therapy.    What Does rTMS Feel Like? rTMS therapy is an easy, in-office experience designed to be positive for patients. During treatment, people are awake, alert, and comfortably reclined in a spa-like chair. The first few treatments may cause discomfort at or near the treatment site, however, this is unlikely to last beyond the first week of treatment.1, 2  “The effects of depression can be devastating for the people battling it, as well as for those who love them,” said Stacie Mathewson. “No matter how dark life may seem, always know, there are incredible behavioral health experts at Renown ready to support and empower you as you seek the help you deserve.”  Charles N. and Stacie L. Mathewson established the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown in 2018 to expand community access to prevention and intervention services for mental health disorders and alcohol and drug addiction. Renown is working to expand intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization and medication-assisted treatment programs to better serve those struggling with mental illness and addiction. The Renown team is also passionate about prevention, mental wellness and is actively working to decrease stigma and encourage more people to seek the help they need. TMS therapy is cleared by the FDA and available by prescription only. It is commonly covered by most insurance plans. Patients must be referred by a behavioral expert to seek rTMS treatment. For more information and to make a patient referral, please call the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at 775-982-5318.   About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally owned and governed, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. Renown Cardiologist Shares Insight on Warfarin

Renown Health's Dr. Christopher Rowan recently joined a distinguished panel of experts on the "Game Changers in Medicine" podcast to discuss the science behind the discovery of warfarin. Renown Health Cardiologist Dr. Christopher Rowan was just featured on an episode of Game Changers in Medicine, a groundbreaking medical history podcast from Dramatic Health about some of the world’s most significant medical discoveries. The episode, Warfarin: How a rat poison became one of the world's most widely prescribed drugs, dives into the fascinating history of Warfarin and its life-saving effects on humans.  During the episode, Dr. Rowan, whose research focus is heart disease and atherosclerosis, is joined by experts Kevin Walters, Historian and Strategic Research Coordinator at the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF); and Ramya M. Rajagopalan, Ph.D. of the Institute for Practical Ethics at UC San Diego. Listen to the episode now or download it wherever you listen to podcasts.  History of Warfarin Warfarin prevents blood clots from forming or expanding. The drug is especially important for individuals who have experienced a heart attack or stroke, or are at risk of experiencing either. However, the backstory of the drug is rather fascinating.  Beginning in the 1920s, an unknown disease was killing cattle throughout the U.S. and Canada. Desperate to find a solution, one farmer drove 200 miles to the University of Wisconsin with a dead cow, bales of spoiled hay and a milk can of unclotted blood in tow. He crossed paths with a scientist, whose team set out to determine the hemorrhagic component of the spoiled hay, resulting in a series of medical discoveries that would revolutionize medicine.  After learning more about Warfarin and how Vitamin K could reverse its blood thinning properties, doctors first prescribed the drug for human use in 1954. It is perhaps most widely known for saving President Dwight D. Eisenhower after he suffered a heart attack in 1955. Today, Warfarin continues to saves millions of lives each year. “Before blood thinners like Warfarin, people would experience strokes, blood clots in their lungs, blood clots in their legs, blood clots in their hearts, along with countless other clotting disorders - these conditions likely cutting their lifespans short,” Dr. Rowan said during the podcast. “Warfarin revolutionized the treatment of patients who suffer from heart attacks and strokes, helping them to live normal and healthy lives. The drug changed medicine forever and helped make incredible innovations such as mechanical heart valves a reality.” Interview Opportunity Dr. Rowan is available for interviews to discuss the importance of this unique medical discovery and the positive impact it has on many of the patients he treats every day. Reno Orthopedic Clinic and Renown Partner to Enhance Orthopedic Care for Northern Nevada

Both organizations have a long history of community support, a reputation for exceptionally-trained physician and provider teams, innovative approaches that have improved access and convenience, superior levels of clinical quality and service, and a commitment to making health care more affordable.    “What an important day for orthopedic care in our community! This partnership brings together two organizations that have the vision to elevate care, expertise and innovation in orthopedics and sports medicine,” said Renny Uppal, MD, ROC President and Chairman. ”We are excited to help usher in the next generation of orthopedic care for our community.”    “We have worked closely with the Reno Orthopedic Clinic and its team of caregivers for a long time, and we recognize the excellent quality of care and compassion they provide to their patients,” said Tony Slonim, MD, D.Ph., Renown’s President & CEO. “Given our mutual interests in advancing high-quality and high-value care, this partnership expands capabilities, enhances access and affordability, improves the health of our community and establishes a new premier destination for orthopedics and sports medicine, right here in northern Nevada.”   This partnership for orthopedic health care is the result of the unique collaborative relationship between Renown Health, Reno’s only not-for-profit health care system; and Reno Orthopedic Clinic, an independently-owned and operated, private multi-specialty orthopedic practice. This partnership brings together three key elements to serve the community with enhanced orthopedic care that includes:   A seamless patient journey. With the patient at the center, ROC and Renown will co-design the ideal orthopedic patient care experience, provide consistent clinical care pathways and a seamless experience.   Increased value for the patient. Working collaboratively, ROC and Renown healthcare providers will work on behalf of the patient to deliver orthopedic care. Both organizations are leading the way in providing exceptional care teams to increase value, efficiency, improve outcomes and better manage the total cost of care for patients.  A new level of convenience. Over the next year, ROC or Renown patients will be able to schedule appointments online, view radiology and lab results online, send a message to their provider or view documentation of procedures, surgeries and medications, 24 hours a day on Renown’s Epic MyChart electronic medical record, which is available via smart phone app or computer. This new technology will enhance communication between patients and their medical teams, reduce delays and increase efficiency.  “Both ROC and Renown have a focus on offering well-coordinated, innovative and efficient care, and an improved patient experience. There is great potential to improve quality, accessibility and affordability of orthopedic care for our community. We look forward to improving care together,” said Eric Boyden, MD, a physician with the ROC Center for Joint Replacement.   “Delivering high-quality, cost-effective services in the communities where our patients live is a fundamental part of Renown Health’s strategy. Traditionally, orthopedic surgeries were performed in hospitals, but advancements in technology, anesthesia and pain control now allow physicians to perform certain procedures in an outpatient site, or an ambulatory surgical center which can be a more convenient and cost-effective option, said Erik Olson, CEO of Renown Regional Medical Center. “Our community is growing and we are seeing more complex care needs. Renown is excited to invest and expand the range of outpatient surgical services we have available.”  "Through this partnership, patients from throughout the region will visit us for the most advanced technologies in orthopedic care, and experience the remarkable customer service we provide,” says Lisa Mead, ROC CEO. “We are excited that this partnership will allow our orthopedic surgeons to perform surgeries in a range of settings, and to do what is best for the patient, be that in a hospital or an outpatient site.”   Reno Orthopedic Clinic, in response to the tremendous growth in the region, has been working over the last five years to create the $54 million dollar ROC Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, a new facility being built in downtown Reno. The combined strength of the new partnership will further develop the capabilities for this Institute which features a surgery center, advanced imaging center, clinical offices, physical therapy, a post-operative recovery center and the Chiron Center – a bio skills lab and education center, offering specialized training for future healthcare providers. The facility is on schedule to open at 555 North Arlington Avenue in winter 2020.   A member of the northern Nevada community for over 60 years, providing high-quality orthopedic care across eight offices, Reno Orthopedic Clinic brings to the relationship 31 physicians, 20 advanced practitioners, and 15 physical and occupational therapists specializing in orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, sports medicine and coverage in nearly every orthopedic subspecialty.   Renown Regional Medical Center is home to one of the nation’s busiest Trauma Centers, accredited by the American College of Surgeons, caring for thousands of people, the vast majority requiring some level of orthopedic care. With more than 150 years of excellence in orthopedics, the Joint Commission has given their Gold Seal of Approval® accreditation to Renown for Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement and Total Shoulder Replacement. US News & World Report ranks Renown South Meadows Medical Center as “High Performing” for Knee Replacement and Hip Replacement.  "With all of the pieces in place – top quality orthopedic specialty providers and one of the busiest trauma programs in the nation – we expect the ROC Institute for Musculoskeletal Health Center for Orthopedic Medicine will be a gift to those who live, work and play here in Nevada," said Ms. Mead.       www.renoortho.com/ www.renown.org
