Dr. Slonim Outside

Meet Our CEO

Anthony Slonim, MD, DrPH, FACHE

President and Chief Executive Officer, Renown Health

Dr. Anthony (Tony) Slonim is the president and CEO of Renown Health, one of the nation's most innovative and progressive health systems. Tony leads Renown's charitable mission of making a genuine difference in the community's health and well-being.

The integrated healthcare system, based in Reno, NV, includes four hospitals, 100 sites for primary, urgent and specialty care; telehealth; an integrated, provider sponsored health plan and accountable care organization serving more than 160,000 members across northern Nevada, with products including Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and commercial. Most recently, Dr. Slonim and his team are working to integrate the University of Nevada’s School of Medicine into Renown Health and have established a Clinically Integrated Network with 600 providers and 100,000 at-risk lives. Renown's more than 7,000 employees and 1,500 physician-providers serve as the regional referral center for 100,000 square miles from Sacramento to Salt Lake City.

With a focus on caring for patients, members, and the community, Tony has brought thought leadership, innovative methods, and a personal passion for population health. He is building and inspiring a team that serves based on the values of caring, integrity, collaboration and excellence. He has helped to usher in a new lens of transparency around quality and service excellence.

In 2018, based on his work in northern Nevada, Governor Steve Sisolak appointed Dr. Slonim as a Commissioner on the Patient Protection Commission, a statewide task force responsible for improving the access, affordability and quality of health care for all Nevadans. As one of two hospital-based Commissioners, Tony’s working knowledge and command of the industry’s health policy issues at the national, state and local level have made him a fierce advocate for addressing patients’ needs. Dr. Slonim’s ability to explain and relate to people, in real terms, about how these issues affect the challenges Nevadans face with their health and health care each day has made him a welcome voice on the Commission and in the State capitol. A collaborator by nature, Dr. Slonim is motivated by team-based outcomes and uses his skills to influence and improve outcomes in the best interest of those he serves, including those most vulnerable citizens who may not have a voice of their own.

Dr. Slonim is recognized nationally as a thought and opinion leader who does not accept the status quo. He is a quadruple board-certified physician by training and holds a Doctorate in Public Health and Health Policy with Fellowships in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), American Association of Physician Leaders (AAPL), and the College of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Slonim has authored more than 120 publications, 15 textbooks, and has millions of dollars in research funding to his name. Modern Healthcare has named Tony as one of the 50 Most Influential Leaders in Healthcare. He has been named to Becker's Hospital Review's "Physician Leaders to Know" list since 2014. Tony enjoys telling the Renown story on a national stage, and is a two-time TEDx speaker.

Dr. Slonim uses these personal tools to advocate and contribute more broadly at the national level in service to others. He is a regular contributor at conferences, both industry and scientific, through publications, on podcasts, and in news programming. Dr. Tony Slonim was recently appointed as a Board member for the American Hospital Association for a term beginning 1/1/2022. Dr. Slonim is the inaugural editor-in-chief of the American Association of Physician Leader’s Physician Leadership Journal since 2017 serving the needs of the 15,000 physician leaders who subscribe to this bi-monthly publication. The receipt of numerous awards and accolades has acknowledged Dr. Slonim’s service at the local, state and national level.

In 2016, he caught the industry's attention by launching the Healthy Nevada Project®, the first community based, population health study combining genetic, environmental, social and clinical data to address individual and community health needs. The Healthy Nevada Project®, an innovative collaboration with the global leader in environmental data, Desert Research Institute, and personal genomics company, Helix, is returning clinically actionable genetic results to participants and conducting extensive research aimed at improving the health status of Nevadans. As of January 2021, 60,000 volunteer participants have enrolled in this program statewide and the Project has become a model for genetic screening nationwide. The initial findings from this study were published in Nature Medicine in 2019.

Dr. Slonim’s work during the Covid-19 pandemic around broad-based community testing which included outreach to communities of color, constructing a 1,400 bed Alternate Care Facility in a hospital parking garage, and approaches to broad scale vaccination were highlighted in national forums including the Wall Street Journal, Squawk Box, and NBC and CNN. Despite all of these activities, Dr. Slonim never loses sight of those who serve patients each day at Renown Health; as tangible evidence of this, he provided each employee and physician with an additional 10 days of paid time off this year to take time to recharge, recuperate or care for their families as needed.

Dr. Slonim graduated from New York Medical College, served four years in the U.S. Public Service Commissioned Corps, and earned both his master's and doctoral degrees in health policy from The George Washington University's Center for Health Policy Studies. Through his education, he has learned how to research, author, influence and execute broad-based legislation from some of the greatest health policy minds in the United States.

Before joining Renown Health, Tony served on the senior leadership teams for Barnabas Health in New Jersey, Carilion Clinic in Virginia and Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
