FAQ

How does da Vinci Surgery differ from traditional surgery?

• da Vinci Surgery is minimally invasive.
• The entire surgery is performed through one to five small incisions depending on the type
of da Vinci Surgery System. Robotic surgery uses technology that allows hand motions to
translate into extremely precise movements.
• The magnified, 3-D view and small, robotic instruments enhance the ability to perform
complex and delicate procedures through small incisions.
• One of the most significant differences between da Vinci Surgery and traditional surgery
is the patient experience. With da Vinci, patients typically recover much faster, require a
shorter hospital stay and experience less pain after surgery.

What are the common conditions treated with da Vinci Robotic Surgery?

Physician-guided da Vinci Surgery is a treatment option for:

  • Gynecologic conditions (hysterectomy to treat diseases)
  • Gynecologic cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Rectal cancer
  • Diverticulitis (digestive track inflammation)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease)
  • Heart disease
  • Prostate cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation)
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Complex general surgeries.

What physical limitations will I have after the operation, and when will I be able to resume activities such as working, driving and exercise?

The restrictions after surgery depend on the individual and the nature of the surgery. In most cases, patients return to work and normal activities sooner with robotic surgery, although they will experience a measure of fatigue associated with surgery in general.

Does da Vinci Surgery cost more than traditional surgery, and does insurance cover it?

Most insurance companies cover robotic surgery although insurance plans and coverage differ. Speak with your insurance provider for an estimate regarding your procedure. Consult with your doctor to see if a da Vinci Surgery is the right option for you. As with any surgical procedure, results vary patient to patient.
