2015 Nurses Week Wraps Up With Accolades and Achievements
As part of the celebration of our nurses for National Nurses Week, eight Renown Health employees were honored during the annual Northern Nevada Nurses of Achievement awards ceremony at JA Nugget on May 8. Renown nurses received awards in six categories in addition to facility winners from Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center.
Congratulations to all of our Nurses of Achievement honorees — we couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishments and devotion to their patients and profession.
Cristin Peterson – Critical Care
Cristin’s nominator wrote, “Cristin had a five-year-old cancer patient, and she was aware that wasn’t just affecting the patient but the family as well. It was Fourth of July weekend and Cristin wanted to make it as normal as possible for the patient and his brother. After her shift, Cristin made arrangements for the boys to watch the fireworks together from another spot in the hospital.” Cristin notes, “I love what I do, being able to put smiles on faces.”
Nate Chitwood – Emergency Nursing
As part of Nate’s nomination, his co-workers thanked him for always looking out for them. His patients thanked him for listening, holding their hands and caring. Nate notes, “You can’t count on your expectations for how your day will go – there will always be exterior factors outside your control.”
Nichole Alvarez -- Innovations
The mother of one of Nichole’s NICU patients told her she should do education for others on staff due to her wide array of knowledge. Nichole notes, “We need to challenge ourselves everyday and we get to witness miracles. Nursing is not a job, it’s part of who you are.”
Ruth Stone – Lifetime Achievement
As a nurse for 46 years, Ruth has been in a variety of roles including education, leadership and surgical services. Her nominator wrote, “Ruth gives 110 percent each day. Her calm demeanor and professionalism radiates. She is a leader by example.” Ruth also organized two mission trips to the Philippines in 2002 and 2014.
Andrea Holman – Medical/Surgical
Andrea explains, “Nursing is a career to lead by example and being a teacher is how I’ve achieved that feat. I love to teach students and the ability to teach knowledge.”
Jana Jensen – Rookie of the Year
Jana’s nominator wrote, “As a new nurse, Jana had a mountain to climb as all new nurses do, but she showed great compassion.” Jana recently transferred from her nursing unit “to go to home health, and she shows the power of touch and healing,” her nominator adds. Jana says, “Find the difference between empathy and sympathy, and don’t ever lose empathy. We really are doing good things, and we can’t forget that.”
Rachel Likes – Renown Regional Facility Winner
Rachel took care of a PICU patient on and off for two years. Her nominator wrote, “It was amazing to see her care for the patient, mother and father.”
Betsy Demarest – Renown South Meadows Facility Winner
