These words form the core values of Renown Health’s Nursing Vision Statement, “Touching lives through nursing excellence,” and are testaments to the flourishing spirit of nursing throughout the organization.
Renown has a rapidly growing Research Council that is about to embark on a very exciting journey. Co-chaired by Linda Reuber, MSN, RN and Patti Crepps, BSN, RN, the council is comprised of staff nurses, nurse educators, and clinical nurse specialists throughout the health system. The council is also fortunate to have the expertise of medical librarian, Tina Slanc, MLIC.
Council members participate in four day-long workshops focused on the implementation of infrastructure and systems for nursing research at Renown. Topics for the workshops will include critical analysis skills, critiquing of nursing research and research validity, selecting a question and planning a research study, and sponsorship skills. Eventually, the Research Council will be able to provide mentorship, support, and guidance to nurses interested in participating in all facets of nursing research and implementation of evidence-based practice.
In the mean time, Director of Nursing Education and Research, Jen Richards, MSN, RN is working directly with nurses interested in conducting research studies and/or research projects throughout Renown. Some of these nurses are graduate students working on advanced degrees in nursing. Topics for their projects include healing touch, certification in nursing, evidence-based practice, and pain management.
A healthcare organization can be considered “thriving” only when its people are truly engaged and committed to the service they provide. That’s why Shared Governance plays such a vital role in our organization's culture. It’s critical that patient care staff have autonomy over their clinical practice throughout the hospital and on the unit level.
Monthly meetings of the 47-member Interdisciplinary Shared Governance Council allow nurses from varied specialties and other patient care service providers to impact patient care and the patient care environment to meet our organizational goals. In addition, all nursing areas and some interdisciplinary departments have unit-based Shared Governance Committees who meet regularly to affect change in their own area of specialty.
The Clinical Ladder Advancement program at Renown was designed to recognize and reward our nursing staff and allow them to grow and develop in their practice. Nurses are eligible for this program after one year of employment and can advance up to four levels through quality projects, committee participation, organizational participation, mentoring, and leadership to increase their stature and pay.
The Daisy Award is a national award from the Daisy Foundation which recognizes excellence in nursing care. A couple who lost one of their eight-month-old twins at Renown were so impressed with the care their children received they have sponsored the award to be given every month to one of our many caring nurses.
The exceptional work being done here is showcased at our annual Nursing Excellence Conference which is free for our nurses to attend. The daylong event includes a national speaker, discussion of current research, and a variety of other presentations.
