1. Check-In

Once you arrive, you will be greeted by our friendly and attentive ER team. They will guide you through the check-in process, ensuring you and your family feel supported from the moment you arrive.

2. Triage

Next, a trained medical professional will assess the patient's condition and determine the severity level through a triage process. Triage ensures that patients are prioritized depending on the severity of signs and symptoms from illness or injury.

A trained medical professional will review the patient’s current symptoms, vital signs, height, weight and medical history with you. The child's body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure may also be measured during this process.

Please note: Patients arriving by ambulance who are not critically ill or injured may also be transported to the emergency room lobby for triage, similar to patients arriving on their own.

3. Care

With pediatric specialists, child-sized equipment and family-centered care, all patients are in good hands for emergency care at Renown Health. Our pediatric and adult emergency physicians have completed fellowship training in specialty areas such as sports medicine, ultrasound and emergency medical services. Nursing staff and technicians trained in emergency care will ensure you and the patient are informed and as comfortable as possible during your visit to minimize any pain or discomfort.

All patients will be seen by a board-certified emergency physician to diagnose the condition and nursing staff to help your loved one through treatment. If diagnostic tests such as laboratory tests, X-rays or scans are needed to help the attending physician determine a care plan, a member of the emergency department will escort you and your loved one to the imaging area. You might be invited to wait in the emergency lobby until a physician can evaluate the patient further.

At Renown, your family's health and well-being are our top priorities, and we strive to provide efficient care. Please understand that the duration of your ER visit may vary based on the patient’s unique condition, necessary imaging results, treatment plan and other factors. We value your time and are committed to delivering the best possible care.

4. Registration

Renown Children’s Emergency Room staff will ensure that the admitting and treatment process goes smoothly by gathering all necessary information for the patient’s records and obtaining consent for treatment. Our team will help guide you through this process and answer any questions you may have.

5. Reevaluation

After all orders, including lab tests and images, are completed, a physician will examine the results and determine what care or treatment plan is appropriate to move forward. The physician will also determine what specialist, if any, the patient should follow up with after discharge based on their emergency room visit.

6. Discharge

At discharge, all patients are given ample instructions on caring for their condition, wound or illness, including information about any prescribed medications. These instructions are explained in detail, printed and available in MyChart. For your convenience, our physicians can send prescriptions to any pharmacy of your choosing or our in-house pharmacy at Renown Regional, so medications are just steps away.

The emergency care team will equip you with the knowledge to help you and your loved one confidently and safely return home, including any recommendations for follow-up care, so please be sure to ask your questions and for any clarifications.
