Position Purpose

This position has the responsibility of standing an independent watch at the Central Plant and be able to operate with no direct supervision. This position is responsible for providing electricity, heating, cooling, hot water, and soft water to the hospital complex through the operation of boilers, generators, water softeners, water heaters, and refrigeration equipment: Must understand the emergency power system to ensure the proper operation of the standby power in the event of a power failure. Must understand graphics on the Building Automation System (BAS) and correct problems from computer when possible to do so. Must be able to trouble shoot problems on Translogic tube system from the control computer. Must have working knowledge of fire alarm system. Central Plant operators must have the ability to stay calm because of the many emergencies encountered in this position.

Nature and Scope

The Plant Operations Department is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Central Plant. This position is responsible for the efficient operation of the boilers and refrigeration plant.

The major challenges to this position are to keep down time to a minimum by maintaining systems and equipment in a high state of readiness and reliability; to maintain proper water chemistry; and to keep abreast of changes in new technology and equipment. Other related duties and overtime may be required.

This position has the authority to make operational changes to plant within safety limits, running changes to keep operations costs minimized, to shift equipment use as needed, and adding chemical as required.

Decisions that must be referred to the Supervisor are those pertaining to malfunction (if there is sufficient time), equipment changes, and purchasing of supplies and equipment. Must recognize and troubleshoot the BAS, Translogic, and Fire Alarm Systems.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

1. Can actively support Renown Health’s Standards of Conduct.

2. Working knowledge of boilers, chillers, emergency generators, compressors, water softeners, pumps and electric motors.

3. Diagnostic and trouble shooting abilities.

4. Respect and understanding for safety rules, regulations, and procedures.

5. Maturity and common sense to make independent decisions.

6. Electrical/Mechanical abilities to maintain and repair all Central Plant equipment.

7. Interpersonal skills to work effectively with a small crew.

8. Water chemistry.

9. Must have working knowledge of BAS after six months after hire.

10. Must have working knowledge of Translogic Tube System 6 months after hire.

11. Must have working knowledge of Fire Alarm System six months after hire.

This position doesn’t provide direct patient care.

Education:
Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.
Experience:
Experience preferred in operating high-pressure boilers and chillers, on all boilers with required safety equipment, monitors and fail safes. Nevada Administrative Code 455C.274 Part 4. High-pressure, high-temperature water boilers and power boilers are not required to be attended, if the boiler is equipped with the following functioning protective devices, as required by the applicable provisions of Controls and Safety Devices for Automatically Fired Boilers, as adopted by reference in NAC 455C.108:
(a) If the boiler is operated at less than supercritical pressure:
(1) A low water fuel cutoff;
(2) An automatic feed regulator;
(3) Fireside regulators and controls;
(4) An audible alarm to indicate low water;
(5) A pressure control; and
(6) A programmed flame safeguard system with an audible alarm on burners equipped with spark ignition.
Experience with refrigeration equipment, water softeners, emergency generators, pumps, and electric motors.
License(s):
Valid State of Nevada or California Driver's license and ability to pass Renown Health's Department of Motor Vehicle Report criteria.

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
