Position Purpose
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Nature and Scope
The PGY1 residency is designed to meet and adhere to the standards and practice principles set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
The residency is designed to encompass many areas of pharmacy practice through a broad range of learning experiences and staffing positions. The goals of the residency are aimed towards developing the advanced clinical skills and knowledge needed to provide optimal pharmaceutical care for our patients. The resident will expand upon initial pharmacy practice experiences acquired during clerkships and further develop leadership and problem-solving skills, professional attitudes, responsibilities, and sense of accountability. The residency is established in such a way that any services the resident is required to provide complement the educational and clinical objectives of the program.
The residency is conducted over a fifty-two-week period, generally July through June. During this time the resident will complete various learning experiences that are either required or desired by the resident. A timeline of the learning experiences and resident project is developed during the first month of the residency and is based upon both resident and director desires, goals, and areas of interest. This timeline is a guide for the resident and director. Adjustments and changes can be made throughout the year. The resident is also expected to staff a minimum of four shifts per month performing the duties in the areas where competency has been achieved.
The resident will be assessed and evaluated regularly in order to provide valuable feedback and to ensure that the goals and objectives of the program are being met.
This position does provide patient care.
