Conditions & Treatments

This medically supervised outpatient service is for individuals who are living with any of the following conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis (chronic)
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

  • Emphysema
  • Lung cancer
  • Lung transplant
  • Other chronic lung diseases

These conditions are often diagnosed through your primary care provider, a specialist like Renown Pulmonary Medicine or in the hospital setting. These providers can be your advocate by referring you to Renown Pulmonary Rehab.

As a patient you can expect to receive nine weeks of exercise therapy, education and breathing techniques to retrain your respiratory system – all to help improve your quality of life. Under the supervision of a board-certified pulmonologist, our team designs a customized care plan to your individual needs and capabilities.

Exercise is Key

The most essential component of lung health is breaking the cycle of inactivity associated with lung disease. Our exercise program is conducted two times a week, for up to two hour sessions. Instruction and supervision will help you safely and gradually reach your optimal level of function. All activities are carefully structured and monitored.
Monitoring includes:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Pulse oximetry (oxygen monitor)
  • Heart rate monitor via pulse oximetry
  • Weight management

As your activity, tolerance and endurance improve, your exercises should increase. After you graduate our program, you will receive customized guidelines for home-exercise to help maintain your new wellness goals prescribed by our exercise physiologist.

Breathe Easier

We provide diaphragmatic breathing techniques that enable you to help regulate your breathing patterns during exertion. Exercises to retrain and strengthen breathing muscles are used to optimize ventilation and reduce shortness of breath.

Education and Support Groups

Educational sessions will help you better understand the complexities of your lung condition. Family members and caretakers are always invited to attend classroom sessions.
Education topics include:

  • Proper nutrition
  • Detailed breathing retraining
  • Infection prevention and bronchial hygiene
  • Stress management and panic control
  • Oxygen and equipment use

  • Respiratory medications
  • Energy-conservation technique
  • Day-to-day activities
  • Ask the Doctor session with board certified Pulmonologist
