5 Benefits of Medicare Advantage Plans
If you are approaching age 65, you may be starting to think about the government benefits you will soon qualify for. For example, your healthcare option to elect between Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. What’s the difference? Original Medicare comes in two parts: Part A and Part B. Part A covers a portion of hospitalization expenses, and Part B applies to doctor visits and medical expenses, such as lab tests and some preventative screenings. A Medicare Advantage plan, also known as Part C, is an “all-in-one” alternative to Original Medicare. These “bundled” plans include the benefits of Part A, Part B and Part D (prescription drugs). Some people choose a Medicare Advantage Plans over Original Medicare because these plans offer coverage like vision, hearing, dental and more. Saves You Money First and foremost, Medicare Advantage Plans save Medicare members money –and not just a little bit of money, but a lot of money. Original Medicare only pays 80% of the cost of medical care – the Medicare beneficiary is responsible for the other 20%. A Medicare Advantage Plan is different. The Medicare Beneficiary is only responsible for a small copay, typically less than 20% of a doctor visit or procedure. More importantly, Medicare Advantage Plans have a maximum out-of-pocket amount, meaning that once you reach the limit, the Plan pays 100% of all medical services. That alone can save thousands of dollars per year – particularly if there is a hospitalization involved. Dental, Vision and Hearing Coverage What sets Medicare Advantage plans apart is the additional benefits provided that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. These benefits include dental coverage, vision coverage, hearing exams and hearing aid coverage. None of these important health care benefits are included in Original Medicare. Also, most Medicare Advantage Plans include prescription drug coverage at no additional cost, while individuals with Original Medicare need to sign-up and pay extra for Part D prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans offer more benefits than Original Medicare and they help members save on their health care costs. Focus on Accessibility, Wellness and Preventative Health Accessible healthcare coverage is key to staying on top of your health. To join a Medicare Advantage Plan you must have Part A and Part B coverage and live in the plan’s service area. It is important to remember that Original Medicare is only valid in the United States. Fortunately, many Medicare Advantage Plans offer worldwide emergency coverage. Another important healthcare consideration to keep in mind is Medicare Advantage Plans focus on your overall well-being. They offer preventative and wellness-related benefits at no cost to you. This includes important benefits like free over-the-counter medicines and free gym memberships. You won’t find those types of benefits with Original Medicare. Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap) Some people confuse a Medicare Supplement Plan, also known as a Medigap Plan, with Medicare Advantage Plans. They are different and the biggest difference is Medicare Supplement plans come with ever-increasing premiums because they are based on your age. This means the cost of these plans increase every year. Plus, they don’t offer any supplemental benefit coverage like vision, dental or hearing. That’s not the case with a Medicare Advantage Plan. In many cases, there is no monthly premium and you receive all manner of supplemental benefits. These benefit-rich, zero-dollar premium Medicare Advantage plans are enticing people to say goodbye to pricy Medicare supplement plans and hello to Medicare Advantage Plans. Don’t worry, if you join a Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time and you aren’t happy with the plan, you’ll have special rights under federal law to buy a Medigap policy and a Medicare drug plan if you return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining the Medicare Advantage Plan. The Flexibility to Change Your Mind A common misconception about Medicare Advantage Plans is that when you join, you are still on Medicare and are not giving up your Medicare coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans are considered “Medicare Part C.” This means they combine your Medicare Part A (hospital coverage), Part B (doctor’s coverage) and Part D (prescription drug coverage) into one convenient package that costs less and provides more. You can only join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan during the enrollment periods: Initial Enrollment Period: When you first become eligible for Medicare, you can sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period. For many, this is the seven-month period that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends three months after the month you turn 65. General Enrollment Period: If you have Part A coverage and you get Part B for the first time during this period (between January 1 - March 31 each year), you can also join a Medicare Advantage Plan. Your coverage may not start until July 1. Annual Election Period: Between October 15 and December 7, anyone with Medicare can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan. Your coverage will begin on January 1 (as long as the plan receives your request by December 7). Medicare Advantage Plans have been around for more than 25 years and continue to grow in popularity. In some parts of the country, more than half of all Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan. Only 40% are enrolled here in Nevada, but that number is growing every year.

Renown Health Adds Proactive Level of Protection to Address COVID-19 Deployable Medical Structure at Renown Regional Erected as Precautionary Measure WHAT: As we continue our planning and preparation for the impact of COVID-19, Renown Health now has an alternate care site – a deployable medical facility to serve as an additional respiratory illness evaluation and screening center for Emergency Room patients at Renown Regional. Media is invited to tour the tent before it opens and learn more about how Renown Health physicians and staff are prepared to ensure the safety of patients, staff and our community. It’s important to note there are no confirmed COVID-19 cases at Renown at this time. This deployable medical structure is simply a precautionary measure and adds a proactive level of protection if needed because Renown is committed to doing everything possible to protect patients, staff and community members. WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday, March 12 at 1 p.m. in the parking lot outside the Renown Regional Medical Center Emergency Room at 1155 Mill St, Reno, NV. All media must be escorted on hospital property. Mill Street Parking is most convenient. WHY: Due to increasing levels of respiratory illness in our community, as a way to manage influx and limit the exposure between individuals suspected of having respiratory illness and patients and care providers in other areas of the hospital, Renown Health worked with the State Public Health Preparedness to request a deployable medical facility through the Washoe County Emergency Manager. REMSA, the Reno Fire Department and Renown staff also play an integral role in setting up the tent and getting it ready with appropriate supplies. This proactive step to separate patients with symptoms of respiratory illness who need emergency medical care will protect patients in the Emergency Department and other areas of the hospital. Transmission of respiratory illness from patient to patient is not the only concern as healthcare workers can get sick, too. This is a precautionary step Renown is taking as a way we can further help protect patients, staff and community. Masks for Patient Visitors: We are requesting that community members sew masks for loved ones visiting patients at Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center. All patterns and cotton or cotton-blends are welcome. Isolation Gowns: For community crafted isolation gowns, please use the Renown-approved pattern and instructions. Addressing Health Equity for Communities of Color
Area Church Pastors, the City of Reno, the City of Sparks, the Washoe County School District, REMSA and Renown will be available to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, and how they have joined together to provide free COVID-19 testing to area residents. WHAT Media is invited to interview community leaders to learn how we are coming together to address health disparities and promote equity in healthcare access and delivery. The first project to support our community and address health equity is to partner with area pastors to provide free COVID-19 nasal swab testing for adults and children of faith-based organizations, churches and school children. The first drive-through/walk-up test site will be hosted on Saturday, September 26 from 1-4 p.m., at Ministerio Palabra de Vida by Pastor Cesar Minera. Testing will be offered for members of Ministerio Palabra de Vida (Word of Life Ministries) and A.M.E.N. (Asociacion de Ministros Evangelicos de Nevada), a network of over 15 churches in the Reno, Sparks and Carson City area, as well as WCSD students and families living in that area. Black and Latino Americans are three times more likely than white people to contract COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports the COVID-19 hospitalization rate for Black and Latino persons also face similar grim hospitalization rates, 4.7 and 4.6 times higher, respectively, compared to white persons. Black people are dying at a rate nearly two times higher (24%) than their share of the population (13%), and, in 42 states, including Nevada, Latino people make up a greater share of confirmed cases than their share of the population, according to the COVID Data Tracking Project at The Atlantic. In support of Governor Sisolak’s proclamation of Racism as a Public Health Crisis, a partnership of faithbased organizations, churches and Pastors, along with community leaders recognize that it is critical to change the culture of medicine by addressing racism and implicit biases that contribute to health disparities. COVID-19 Patients Enjoy Renown's 'Hospital at Home' Remote Patient Monitoring
Hospital-at-home monitoring allows patients to receive hospital-level care in the comfort of their own homes. Renown Health announced today that they are one of the first institutions to home monitor patients who have been hospitalized with COVID-19, as the integrated health network continues to seek innovative solutions to improving the health- and healthcare of those who live in Nevada. This week, six patients at Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center diagnosed with COVID-19 were outfitted with this remote ‘hospital at home’ monitoring system. Care At Your Fingertips: Renown Launches Virtual Symptom Checker
New technology helps patients determine the best level of care for their health needs. Renown Health just announced a new, digital tool designed to keep our community safe and healthy. Symptom Checker, which launched today, is a user-friendly, web-based platform that assesses patients’ symptoms and seamlessly directs them to the appropriate level of care within the Renown network. Symptom Checker can be accessed 24/7 by visiting Renown Symptom Checker. From there, a patient can identify the area of the body responsible for their discomfort, and specify their symptoms. Upon entering their symptoms, patients receive a detailed health summary and care guide, which helps them determine the most appropriate action to take. Patients are able to schedule a visit at a Renown location directly through the Symptom Checker portal. Renown Re-Erects Deployable Medical Structure as COVID-19 Cases Rise
Tent serves as respiratory illness evaluation and screening center. WHAT: A Temporary Deployable Medical Structure is being erected outside the Renown Regional Emergency Department as another way to screen and evaluate community members suspected of having respiratory illnesses, and to enhance prevention and limit exposure. Media is invited to tour the tent before it opens to learn the latest on how Renown Health doctors, nurses and staff are responding to an increase in COVID-19 cases and continue to ensure the safety of patients, staff and our community.
