During September, Suicide Prevention Month, Dr. Takesha Cooper shares her thoughts on how you can support others As we observe National Suicide Prevention Month this September, Renown Health and University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine reaffirm a commitment to addressing mental health challenges and preventing comprehensive support to those at risk of suicide. Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues. As a psychiatrist, I have the privilege of sitting with my patients as they share their painful suicidal thoughts, and I strive to create a space where they feel safe to express their feelings openly and withoutjudgment. As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I share the concerns of parents who worry deeply about their teens’ overwhelming emotions, self-injury, and feelings of hopelessness. Together, we work on simply validating their child's experiences, even when the instinct as a parent is to try and 'fix' things. As a mother, I can’t help but think about my own children and their peers, many of whom are grappling with depression and anxiety, especially in the wake of the pandemic. And as a teacher of resident physicians, I guide my learners in recognizing the signs of suicide in their patients and ensuring they have the tools to offer support and safety.” Providing care and support has always been my priority, but I also recognize that mental health is a complex journey, and everyone faces unique struggles. Training respiratory therapists as part of a healthcare team to help diagnose, treat and manage conditions to help restore or maintain lung and breathing function. Applications due Oct. 31, 2024 Great Basin College and Renown Health are partnering to bring the first Respiratory Therapy training program to educate new healthcare professionals to meet the growing needs of the community.   With the generosity of grant funders, the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and the Health Resources and Services Administration, Great Basin College will launch the first and only available program of its kind in support of several rural northern Nevada communities. According to project leads, the program and the trained respiratory therapists will bring great value to the community and healthcare system.  “Great Basin College is thrilled to join forces with Renown Health to launch this new program and be a critical contributor to advancing the respiratory care profession for our community,” says Interim GBC President Dr. Amber Donnelli.  The program is an accelerated 18-month program resulting in an Associate of Applied Science in Cardio-Respiratory Care Science degree. It's incredibly high-tech, uses leading-edge training equipment, and provides real-world experience to students.  In-person classes will be offered at GBC campuses in Elko and Winnemucca and at Renown Health in Reno. Applications will open this June and are due October 31, 2024. The first program courses will begin in the Spring of 2025. Today, a celebration was held as donors, Renown Health and the University of Nevada, Reno Orvis School of Nursing awarded 29 nursing students with tuition support as part of the Gerald “Jerry” Smith Academic-Practice Partnership established with the Renown Health Foundation. The Practice Partnership is named in honor of the late Jerry Smith of the Nell J. Redfield Foundation and supported by a generous lead gift from the Redfield Foundation and Stephanie Kruse, owner of KPS3 and chair of the Renown Health Foundation Board as they work to create a sustainable nursing workforce in northern Nevada for years to come. Kruse made a generous planned gift to the Renown Health Foundation and the Renown Nursing Excellence Endowment Fund. This was the lead gift for the endowment, after a significant cash gift to the Nursing Education Fund last summer. Helmsley Charitable Trust has granted $3.1 million to Renown Health for construction of a new simulation and innovation center that will greatly expand the health system’s ability to train healthcare providers throughout northern Nevada. The new center will be named the Helmsley Simulation and Innovation Center. Expected to open in April 2023, the center will feature three simulated patient rooms, classroom space, computer labs and a conference center, allowing trainers to run current and future healthcare professionals through real-life acute, outpatient, telemedicine and specialty care scenarios. After administering more than 73,000 dose one and dose two vaccinations to our community, Renown's vaccine team will conclude its efforts at Renown's drive-thru site later this month. Renown Health has been pleased to work with the Washoe County Health District, the state, and the CDC to distribute the limited supplies of COVID-19 vaccines. Leaders of the COVID-19 vaccine taskforce at Renown announced today that Wednesday, May 12, 2021 will be the last day the organization will administer dose one of the COVID-19 vaccine to community members at Renown’s drive-thru clinic.  Renown's vaccine clinic will remain open until all individuals who receive their first dose of the vaccine through Renown have the opportunity to receive their second dose. To date, Renown’s vaccine team has administered more than 73,000 dose 1 and dose 2 vaccinations to medical staff members, Renown employees, students, volunteers and eligible community members. “It has been an honor assisting our local and statewide health partners in the herculean feat of vaccinating the hundreds of thousands of area residents excited to receive the vaccine,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President and CEO of Renown Health. “As we conclude our efforts at our drive-thru vaccine clinic, we are glad to continue working closely with our community health leaders and be ready to assist once again should there be a need for our support in the future.
