The historic interfaith chapel at Renown Regional Medical Center was dedicated to Henry Kohl 50 years ago. Over the years, it underwent basic updates, but a transformational renovation and expansion was required to better suit the needs of our diverse community.
The vision for the newly renovated Spiritual Center & Estelle J. Kelsey Interfaith Sanctuary was to provide a multi-use space that would fully embrace all faith practices and the diversity of patients, their loved ones and caregivers. By working side-by-side with community partners such as the Nevada Interfaith Association, Renown can offer patients better access to more comprehensive spiritual care programs. The Spiritual Center is a cornerstone for programs where patients and families can gather for fellowship, guidance, peace, reflection, comfort and strength.
Renovation of the historic interfaith chapel at Renown Regional Medical Center that was dedicated to Henry Kohl 50 years ago began in early October 2017 and was completed in March 2018. The inaugural of the Spiritual Center took place May 6 through 12, 2018.
In addition to hosting formal services, classes and events, the Spiritual Center offers a Resource Room equipped with online access to a network of interfaith resources, religious and spiritual leaders, and a library of materials that support spiritual health and wellness as one deals with medical issues.
The design of the Spiritual Center’s Interfaith Sanctuary incorporates natural elements of wood, metal, stone and glass. The original stained glass center piece highlighting Nevada’s natural landscape of sun, mountains, trees, and lakes is the central feature of the room which is illuminated from behind to provide a constant glow to the Sanctuary. In addition, the eastern wall adorned with wooden laser cut paneling in the form of tree roots is also illuminated to serve as an eternal flame that represent the eternal spirit of the space. On the opposite western wall is the Giving Tree where individuals and organizations can memorialize with a leaf a loved one while directly supporting Renown’s spiritual care programming.
Features of the Spiritual Center also include the Wall of World Religions and the Coming Together Quilt both of which emphasize the space’s commitment to respect and uphold the diversity of our community’s spiritual traditions and beliefs.
Renown Health and the Nevada Interfaith Association held an art contest to celebrate the opening of the new Spiritual Center & Estelle J. Kelsey Interfaith Sanctuary at Renown Regional Medical Center. Three works of art from numerous submissions were selected as the winners and are displayed at the entrance of the Spiritual Center.
