Renown Health Officially Opens Life-Saving Kidney Transplant Program, Patient Assessments to Begin Immediately

New Renown Transplant Institute will transform lives through advanced care and innovation Renown Health announced the official opening today of the Renown Transplant Institute, a multidisciplinary team of leading surgeons, physicians, and healthcare professionals working together to bring essential services, hope and life-saving treatment to people with end-stage kidney disease.  Today’s press conference announcement was attended by physicians, clinical staff, area health care and dialysis leaders, transplant recipients, administrators, donors and supporters. “Today marks a significant step forward in our mission to deliver life-saving care for patients with end-stage renal disease who require a kidney transplant for survival,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, MBA, CEO of Renown Medical Group. “It is humbling and inspiring – and such a gift this holiday season- to announce this program for our patients, community and state.” Dr. Mediwala is a nephrologist who has practiced in the community for nearly 20 years.  He added,” Chronic kidney disease affects more than 37 million people in the United States, with thousands of patients progressing to end-stage renal disease each year. For many, a kidney transplant is the best treatment option, offering improved quality of life and survival rates compared to long-term dialysis. However, access to transplantation has traditionally been limited, especially in underserved communities like northern Nevada.” Dr. Mediwala said, “I’ve seen people die here in northern Nevada, waiting for a kidney transplant. They were not able to afford being out of work or the expense of traveling out of the area to receive life-sustaining care. With the opening of the Renown Transplant Institute, we are addressing this gap by providing timely access to comprehensive transplant evaluations and essential care. Now, residents in need of advanced kidney treatment and transplantation can stay close to home and receive comprehensive transplant evaluation and treatment here at Renown. They will no longer need to endure long waits or seek residency or care in other states, which will help alleviate the financial, physical, and emotional burden for critically ill patients and their families.” Introducing the Renown Transplant Team Dr. Mediwala introduced the Renown Transplant Team to area media and the community. “Together, the Renown Transplant Institute’s physician leadership has more than 65 years of experience caring for hundreds of kidney transplant patients. The multidisciplinary team includes transplant surgeons, a transplant nephrologist, transplant nurse coordinator, social worker, dietician, pharmacist and financial coordinator who will assist patients through the transplant journey. Supported by the Renown nephrology and surgical teams, the Renown Transplant Institute team provides comprehensive transplant services, including pre-transplant evaluation, surgical procedures, and post-transplant care, all under one roof here at Nevada’s #1 ranked hospital, Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV.” The Executive Director of the Renown Transplant Institute and Chief of Transplantation at Renown Health is nationally recognized transplant surgeon Ernesto P. After completing an adult and pediatric abdominal transplant fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, he has led multi-organ transplant efforts at Baylor University Medical Center/Children’s Medical Center of Dallas; The University of Texas Southwestern; The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; and The University of Arizona College of Medicine. Dr. Molmenti has authored 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts/chapters and written 6 textbooks translated into multiple languages. His research interests include interventions to eliminate disparities in transplantation and increase organ donor registration.  “Understanding the great need that exists for this critical resource, we are focusing all our energy on creating a caring, efficient and responsive environment for our patients to support them through their transplant experience,” says Ernesto Molmenti, MD, PHD, MBA. “We are eager to begin assessing patients for kidney transplant. We recognize the courage it takes to begin the transplant journey, and we want to assure our patients that they are not alone. The goal of our program is to perform successful transplants and ensure holistic support for patients and their families.” Dr. Molmenti referenced the Renown Transplant Institute team including:  David C. While there, he helped build one of the largest and most experienced transplant programs in the U.S. and completed over 2070 kidney transplantations as part of a comprehensive team. The entire RTI team, including the transplant nurse coordinator, social worker, dietician, pharmacist and financial coordinator were introduced. Expanding Access to Life-Saving Kidney Transplants Dr. Mediwala stated, “we are so grateful and excited to partner with Joe Ferreira and the Nevada Transplant Institute team to bring kidney transplant services to Nevada, marking a monumental step forward in healthcare access for our community,” Dr. Mediwala welcomed Mr. Ferreira to the podium.  Mr. Ferreira said, “Today’s milestone is not just about providing lifesaving medical care, it’s about offering hope, healing and the promise of a healthier future to individuals and families who have been waiting for this second chance at life. The expansion of essential transplantation services across our state is made possible because of our extraordinary partnership. Together, we are working to increase access, lower costs, and enhance research and education in the field of donation transplantation. We are incredibly grateful for their support and assistance.”  He added, “the need for additional organ transplantation expertise across the U.S. and Nevada is critical. According to the Nevada Donor Network, 644 kidney patients in Nevada are currently on a waiting list to receive a life-saving kidney transplant. Across the country, every day 17 people die each day because an organ does not become available to them while they are waiting and every 8 minutes someone is added to the waiting list. Across the country, 90,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant.” One of those people is Reno’s own, Massiel Smith, who Mr. Ferreira introduced to the audience to share her story. Reno’s Own Massiel Smith Shares Her Kidney Transplant Story Massiel Smith shared that she is a grateful recipient of a kidney transplant who continues to fight on behalf of the hero who gave her the ultimate gift. As a teenager, she was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a type of kidney disease that would ultimately require a kidney transplant. As she began a career in dialysis, she gained a new perspective on life. A year later, she was on the transplant waiting list and decided to volunteer with Nevada Donor Network. During a volunteer event, Massiel met a donor mom who shared her story about her son. She didn't mention her transplant journey or that she was waiting for the ultimate gift, but it truly was a moment which reminded her to keep fighting. Two years after this pivotal meeting, she received the call that she had been anxiously hoping for, her ultimate gift, a kidney transplant. Massiel had to leave the area to receive a kidney transplant. She believed this time in her life was the most pure and humbling experience. She thanked the team at Renown Transplant Institute and Nevada Transplant Institute, for bringing these essential services to the northern Nevada community- and the patients and families who will benefit from them.  Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO of Renown Health, thanked Massiel for sharing her story, saying, “A kidney transplant is the best life-saving option for people like Maissel living with kidney disease. Our goal is that every eligible person who is seeking a kidney transplant receives one.”  He announced that the Renown Transplant Institute has been granted Organ Procurement & Transplantation Network (OPTN) certification, and UNOS approval. This makes Renown Regional Medical Center one of only 250 transplant centers nationwide and one of only two centers in all of Nevada. “By providing kidney transplant services to patients in Nevada, we hope to improve transplant rates in our region and reduce health care disparities across the state. This now enables the Renown Transplant Institute team to begin assessing patients for kidney transplants.” “This holiday season,” he said, we are reminded of the power of gratitude and giving. We are proud to announce a transformative $5.5 million donation from the William N. Pennington Foundation, and we thank those who are with us today from The Pennington Foundation, for their extraordinary generosity.  This gift supports the recruitment and start-up phase for kidney transplants including covering costs for transplant surgeons, nephrologists, medical personnel and personnel staff and related costs.  The grant also establishes the William N. Pennington Patient Assistance Fund, a program dedicated to supporting transplant patients and their families during their medical journey. Our goal is to ensure that all those in need have access to the best possible care regardless of their financial situation. In recognition of their generous gift, the 9th floor of the Center for Advanced Medicine at Renown Regional Medical Center, will be named the William N. Pennington Transplant Suite.” He closed the press conference by saying, “All of us at Renown are forever grateful to our patients, community and donors for their many gifts.” We are working diligently to meet the highest standards of clinical excellence, and we are now ready to provide this life-changing option to patients who need it most. Together, we are paving the way for better health outcomes and a brighter future for those in need.” Assessments Now Open for Kidney Transplant Candidates With the opening of this new program, the Renown Health team is working closely with local healthcare providers and social workers at area dialysis centers to streamline referrals and ensure a smooth transition for patients to the transplant list. The Renown Transplant Institute is now accepting referrals for kidney transplant. Candidates will undergo a thorough evaluation process to determine their eligibility and readiness for a transplant. Physicians may now refer patients, or people with end-stage kidney disease who wish to be screened for a kidney transplant by Dr. Narisorn Atsava-Svate and Dr. Ernesto Molmenti, may call 1-833-RING-NTI (746-4684). Renown Health Achieves Key Milestone with Certification to Begin Kidney Transplant Program, Patient Assessments to Begin Immediately

The Renown Transplant Institute proudly announces a major milestone in its mission to provide life-saving care to patients with end-stage kidney disease. As of November 6, the Institute has been granted Organ Procurement & Transplantation Network (OPTN) certification, and interim approval of its application for full UNOS approval on December 13, 2024. This now enables the Institute team to begin assessing patients for kidney transplants. “This approval marks a significant step forward in our mission to deliver life-saving care for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who require a kidney transplant for survival,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO of Renown Health. “A kidney transplant is the best life-saving option for people living with kidney disease. Our goal is that every eligible person who is seeking a kidney transplant receives one. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to UNOS which oversees organ procurement and allocation nationally, for their rapid processing of Renown’s application. Our team is working diligently to meet the highest standards of clinical excellence, and we are now ready to provide this life-changing option to patients who need it most. Together, we are paving the way for better health outcomes and a brighter future for those in need.” With the certification in place, the Renown Transplantation Institute team is now fully equipped to assess and prepare patients for kidney transplantation. This milestone underscores the Institute’s commitment to delivering the highest quality patient care while addressing the growing demand for transplant services. Expanding Access to Life-Saving Kidney Transplants Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects more than 37 million people in the United States, with thousands of patients progressing to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) each year. For many, a kidney transplant is the best treatment option, offering improved quality of life and survival rates compared to long-term dialysis. However, access to transplantation has traditionally been limited, especially in underserved communities like northern Nevada. The need for additional organ transplantation expertise across the U.S. and Nevada is critical. According to the Nevada Donor Network, as of October 15, 2024, 659 kidney patients in Nevada are currently on a waiting list to receive a life-saving kidney transplant. Across the country, every day 17 people die each day because an organ does not become available to them while they are waiting and every 8 minutes someone is added to the waiting list. “We are excited to receive approval to assess patients for kidney transplantation for the Renown Transplant Institute,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, MBA CEO of Renown Medical Group. “It is humbling and inspiring to have the opportunity to help build this program for our patients, community and state,” said Dr. Mediwala, a nephrologist who has practiced in the community for nearly 20 years. “I’ve seen people die here in northern Nevada, waiting for a kidney transplant. They were not able to afford being out of work or the expense of traveling to receive life-sustaining care. They will no longer need to endure long waits or seek residency or care in other states, which will help alleviate the financial, physical, and emotional burden for critically ill patients and their families. The transplant team is led by nationally recognized transplant surgeon Ernesto P. Molmenti, MD, PHD, MBA, and transplant nephrologist Narisorn Atsava-Svate, MD, who have joined the Renown nephrology and surgical teams in providing comprehensive transplant services, including pre-transplant evaluation, surgical procedures, and post-transplant care, all under one roof at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV. Together, the Renown Transplant Institute’s physician leadership has more than 45 years of experience caring for hundreds of kidney transplant patients. The multidisciplinary team includes a transplant surgeon, transplant nephrologist, transplant nurse coordinator, social worker, dietician, pharmacist and financial coordinator who will assist patients through the transplant journey. “Understanding the great need that exists for this critical resource, we are focusing all our energy on creating a caring, efficient and responsive environment for our patients to support them through their transplant experience,” says Ernesto Molmenti, MD, PHD, MBA. “This is a great first step, and we are eager to get started with assessing patients for kidney transplant. We recognize the courage it takes to begin the transplant journey, and we want to assure our patients that they are not alone. The goal of our program is to perform successful transplants and ensure holistic support for patients and their families. At the Renown Transplant Institute, we are pleased to bring together all collaborating specialties in a supportive environment. We want people suffering from end-stage renal disease to know that our team is here to walk beside you, every step of the way.” Dr. Ernesto Molmenti who serves as Chief of Transplantation at Renown Health, Executive Director of the Renown Transplant Institute, Professor at University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Director and Executive Vice President of the Nevada Transplant Institute, said, “the expansion of these essential transplantation services across our state is made possible because of our extraordinary partnership with the Nevada Transplant Institute. Together, we are working to increase access, lower costs, and enhance research and education in the field of donation transplantation. We are incredibly grateful for their support and assistance.” Transplant nephrologist Narisorn Atsava-Svate, MD, who goes by “Dr. Nate,” said, “This certification attests to the quality and capability of Renown Health, its ancillary services and the excellence of the transplant clinical team that we have assembled to care for patients suffering from advanced chronic kidney disease. Renown Regional Medical Center is on course to be one of only 250 transplant centers nationwide and one of only two centers in all of Nevada. Membership means that our institution meets all Organ Procurement & Transplantation Network requirements and that we play an active role in forming the policies that govern the transplant community. By providing kidney transplant services to patients in Nevada, we hope to improve transplant rates in our region and reduce health care disparities across the state. I am honored and privileged to be part of this exciting new program.” Assessments Now Open for Kidney Transplant Candidates “With the opening of this new program, the Renown Health team is working closely with local healthcare providers and social workers at area dialysis centers to streamline referrals and ensure a smooth transition for patients to the transplant list,” said Dr. Rahul Mediwala. As IV Fluid Shortages Continue Across Nation, Renown is Prepared

Systems are in place at Renown Health to increase inventory tracking, optimize the distribution of available supplies, and improve communication to ensure that critical areas receive priority access. Healthcare facilities across the country are implementing conservation plans and warning the public of potential disruptions in elective surgical procedures since Baxter International temporarily closed a large IV fluid manufacturing site in Marion, North Carolina as a result of hurricane Helene. The Marion factory supplied 60% of the nation's IV fluids to health facilities. As the nation braces for the full impact of this IV fluid shortage, Renown Health continues to prepare for our community.  Renown is actively implementing measures to conserve its supply of IV fluids, an essential component in patient care across multiple departments.  Renown continues to provide urgent, emergency and critical care as the region’s only Level 2 trauma center for adults and children across northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California, and continues to monitor the evolving situation while performing and successfully scheduling medically necessary procedures. Renown serves one million residents across 100,000 rural square miles from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, providing 70% of inpatient care and 73% of Medicaid and uninsured care across the region, and serves as the safety net system for the northern Nevada community.  “Out of an abundance of caution, Renown has deployed the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) to address the ongoing IV fluid shortage and to increase inventory tracking, optimize the distribution of available supplies across departments, and improve communication to ensure that critical areas receive priority access,” says Amy McCombs, MSN, RN, Chief Operations Officer for Renown Regional Medical Center and Incident Commander for the Hospital Incident Command System. “In addition, we are working closely with suppliers, state and national healthcare agencies to mitigate the impact of the IV fluid supply shortage on patient care.” “At this time, based on the current IV fluid inventory, physicians and care teams at Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center are taking immediate action to ensure that we can continue to deliver safe and effective care to our patients,” says Ms. McCombs.  “Patient care remains our top priority, and we are committed to navigating this situation responsibly and transparently. We areworking with our partners to ensure consistent access to our vital services,” says Bill Plauth, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health. “We thank our surgeons and care teams for their exceptional care, having diligent oversight of the conservation of IV products and working collaboratively to ensure that access to high quality patient care is available for our community.” For up-to-date information on Renown’s approach to keeping our community safe, visit our website at renown.org/IV-Fluid-Response.  About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit integrated health care network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and northeast California. Renown Health announces the appointment of Ernesto P. Molmenti, M.D., PH.D. M.B.A. as the hospital’s inaugural kidney transplant surgeon. Dr. Molmenti comes to Renown from New York City. Dr. Molmenti is a highly skilled and experienced transplant surgeon specializing in kidney transplantation. He has 25 years of experience in performing successful kidney transplant surgeries and is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life. The need for additional organ transplantation expertise across the U.S. and Nevada is critical. Across the U.S.,17 people die each day because an organ does not become available to them while they are waiting and every 8 minutes someone is added to the waiting list. Kidneys are the most sought-after organ for transplantation. UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) reports that there are 89,101 people on the national kidney transplant waitlist. Because of the lack of transplant surgeons and organ availability, only 25,499 kidney transplants were performed in the U.S. last year. In Nevada, 575 people are currently on the kidney transplant waiting list. “A kidney transplant is the best life-saving option for people living with kidney disease. The level of expertise needed to provide transplant services beyond Las Vegas does not currently exist. Here at Renown Health, we are expanding these essential services, so that residents in need of advanced kidney care and transplantation will no longer need to endure long waits or seek life-saving care in other states, which will alleviate the financial, physical, and emotional burden for critically ill patients and their families,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO of Renown Health. “Dr. Molmenti brings a depth of experience to his role, having performed numerous successful kidney transplant surgeries throughout his distinguished career. His arrival signals a new era for Renown Health and underscores our academic health system’s dedication to advancing innovative treatments and improving patient outcomes.” He adds, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the state of Nevada, the Nevada Donor Network, donors and community partners who have worked tirelessly to make the Renown Transplant Institute® a reality for so many. Together, we are paving the way for better health outcomes and a brighter future for those in need.” Under Dr. Molmenti’s leadership, Renown Health will become the first health care provider in northern Nevada to offer kidney transplantation, providing exceptional care and fostering hope for patients and families facing kidney disease. “Dr. Molmenti helps to fill an important health care need for northern Nevadans living with kidney or liver disease, by adding lifesaving transplant expertise as a treatment option and completing the full spectrum of kidney care provided by medical and surgical specialists at Renown,” said Christos Galanopoulos, MD MBA, MSc, FACS, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Renown Health. “His expertise in kidney transplantation is invaluable as we begin a transplant program to meet the growing needs of our community. Through Dr. Molmenti’ s leadership, the quality of life will be enhanced for every person suffering from kidney disease.” As the first kidney transplant surgeon at Renown Health, Dr. Molmenti joins Dr. Narisorn Atsava-Svate, transplant nephrologist at the Renown Transplant Institute® to lead a multidisciplinary team of specialists dedicated to providing comprehensive care to patients throughout the transplant process. From evaluation and pre-transplant preparation to surgery and post-operative care, Dr. Molmenti will oversee every aspect of the patient’s journey. “I am honored to join the team at Renown Health and to pioneer the development of our kidney transplant program,” said Ernesto Molmenti, MD. “Kidney transplantation is not just a medical procedure; it’s a life-saving intervention that offers hope and a second chance to patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. I am committed to working collaboratively with our team to ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of care throughout their transplant journey.” Most recently Dr. Molmenti served as System Chief, Surgical Innovation and Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery at North Shore University Hospital-Northwell Health; Director, Kidney Transplantation at North Shore University Hospital-Northwell Health and Professor, Departments of Surgery, Medicine, and Pediatrics at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He established the adult (2007) and pediatric (2016) kidney transplant programs and founded the multi-disciplinary Division of Surgical Innovation across 24 hospitals. Over his career he has led kidney transplant efforts at Baylor University Medical Center; Children’s Medical Center of Dallas; The University of Texas Southwestern; The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; and The University of Arizona College of Medicine. End-Stage Kidney Disease in Nevada and the Need for Transplantation Some people living with chronic kidney disease develop severe kidney damage and very low kidney function. If this condition progresses to the point where kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant is necessary for survival, the condition is called end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). The American Kidney Fund, using the US Renal Data System 2020 annual data, indicates 6,898 Nevada residents are living with ESKD. Kidneys are the most sought-after organ for transplantation. In Nevada, it is estimated that 575 people are currently on the kidney transplant waiting list. Many of them are northern Nevadans in need. Announcing the Renown Transplant Institute®, the First Kidney Transplant Program for Northern Nevada As the only not-for-profit academic healthcare network in the state, Dr. Molmenti, transplant surgeon and Dr. Narisorn Atsava-Svate, transplant nephrologist, join Renown’s world-class team of medical experts with thousands of organ and tissue donors, financial donors and hundreds of residents currently on the kidney transplant waiting list to bring essential services, hope and life-saving treatment to people with end-stage kidney disease. Where There is Smoke; There May Be Headaches, Nausea and Coughing

Renown Urgent Care and Emergency Room teams encourage you to stay safe. Urgent Care is available seven days a week at 10 locations across northern Nevada and Emergency Rooms 24/7.  Millions of people across the West live in areas where air pollution can cause serious health problems. Local air quality can affect our daily lives. Like the weather, it can change from day to day. Northern Nevada Public Health’s (NNPH) Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) has issued an Air Quality Advisory due to the Davis Fire burning in southern Washoe County. Air monitors for the most region hit the “Moderate” range Saturday night, which is 151-200 on the Air Quality Index (AQI). That means some members of the public may experience health effects. All residents in impacted areas are encouraged to regularly monitor the air quality nearest them at www.airnow.gov and limit outdoor exposure when they see or smell smoke. Exposure to elevated PM2.5 (fine particulate matter in smoke) concentrations can result in eye and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, congestion, coughing, impaired lung function and chest pain, especially among sensitive individuals such as the elderly, children, people with asthma, people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women and anyone who is exercising or working hard outdoors.   Aleise Whitlock, APRN, Section Chief for Renown Urgent Care advises that there are people more likely to be affected when fine particle pollution reaches an unhealthy level, including: People with asthma or breathing conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. People who have heart disease or high blood pressure. Children and older adults. People doing extended or heavy physical activity like playing sports or working outdoors. “Everyone should take precautions when the air quality is unhealthy. Air pollution can aggravate heart and cardiovascular disease as well as lung diseases like asthma and COPD. When the air quality is unhealthy, people with these conditions may experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, or fatigue. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, use your inhalers as directed and contact your health care provider,” says Ms. Whitlock. “If you do not have a health care provider, we are happy to see you. Renown Urgent Care offices are on almost every corner, with providers ready to see you.” She advises to take it easy and listen to your body, and: Limit, change, or postpone your physical activity level. Drink plenty of water.  Stay away from local sources of air pollution like busy roads and wood fires. Use a damp cloth or mask to reduce smoke inhalation if you must go outside. If you have asthma or other breathing conditions like COPD keep your relief/rescue inhaler with you. People with asthma should review and follow guidance in their written asthma action plan. Make an appointment to see your health provider to be sure you have an asthma action plan. When to Visit the Emergency Department Bret Frey, MD, President, Western Emergency Physicians and Renown Health Emergency Departments, says, “Seek emergency care if you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms due to smoke exposure: Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing-If breathing becomes labored or painful, you cannot catch your breath even after resting, this may be a sign of serious respiratory distress. Chest pain or tightness- Any discomfort in the chest, particularly if it is associated with breathing, should be evaluated immediately.  Persistent coughing or wheezing- If a cough doesn’t improve or worsens, or if you develop wheezing, you should seek emergency medical attention.  Confusion, dizziness or fainting- These can be signs of oxygen deprivation, and immediate care is critical. Bluish lips or face- A clear indicator that oxygen levels are dangerously low and emergency medical treatment is needed.  Burns or smoke inhalation from a fire- Individuals who have been exposed to fire, or smoke in a confined space, should be evaluated for potential lung damage and other complications.  “Even just one hour of smoke exposure can affect our lungs and hearts, and these consequences can reach people far beyond the direct area endangered by the fire. Children, older adults, pregnant women, people with preexisting cardiopulmonary disease, communities of color, economically disadvantaged communities, and people with preexisting chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and obesity are all especially vulnerable to the air pollution that wildfires cause," says Dr. Frey. Groundbreaking Historic Milestone: Renown Pioneers Histosonics Edison® System Delivering Histotripsy for Non-Invasive Liver Tumor Treatment

Renown’s Surgical Oncology team amongst the first to use HistoSonics' image guided histotripsy system to deliver non-invasive, personalized treatments for patients with liver tumors, thanks to a private donation. Watch this video to learn more about the technology.  Renown Health announced today that the first patients have received targeted liver tumor treatments through the Edison® System histotripsy technology, which uses focused ultrasound waves to noninvasively destroy a designated tissue or tumor in the liver. This revolutionary technology represents a significant advancement in providing leading-edge surgical care to patients. Renown joins the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins in being amongst the first in the country to offer this revolutionary non-invasive clinical procedure. Surgical oncologists Christos A. Galanopoulos MD, MBA, MSc, FACS; Nicholas Manguso, MD; and Randy Zuckerman, MD of the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute at Renown Health, are amongst the first physicians in the world trained to perform the procedure which destroys both primary and metastatic liver tumors, including those that can’t otherwise be removed surgically. Renown’s multidisciplinary team includes surgical oncologists, radiologists, oncologists and nurses who collaborate to provide comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s needs.  “At Renown Health, we are constantly investing in our clinicians, essential services, and medical innovations to help keep care local,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO for Renown Health. “We are grateful to a generous local donor, who provided us with a $1.4-million private donation to help purchase the equipment, training and to establish one of the few histotripsy programs in the U.S. at Renown. This non-invasive technology is a game changer in helping our liver surgeons and surgical oncologists to target and destroy malignant tissue in patients with either liver cancer or tumors that have spread to the liver from cancers based elsewhere in the body. This means people can now stay close to home and loved ones, and no longer need to leave Nevada for this type of advanced care.”  “As a surgeon, it’s rewarding to offer a procedure where we can precisely destroy liver tumors without using a scalpel or needles, enabling a patient’s quick recovery while avoiding certain complications common with other modalities,” says Dr. Christos Galanopoulos, Chair, Department of Surgery at Renown Health, and one of the oncology surgeons trained to perform the HistoSonics procedure. “Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound waves to mechanically destroy targeted tissue, offering a promising alternative to traditional surgical methods. This non-invasive approach reduces recovery time, minimizes complications, and improves patient outcomes. We look forward to the role this innovative technology will have in our treatment plans going forward.”  Revolutionary Technology “Histotripsy is a novel form of therapeutic ultrasound that precisely targets and liquefies tissue without damaging surrounding structures,” says Dr. Randy Zuckerman, surgical oncologist at Renown. “The system works by sending out focused ultrasound to targeted areas of tissue. The ultrasound energy creates pressure in the targeted tumor causing naturally existing gas bubbles to rapidly expand and collapse, helping break down and liquefy the targeted tissue. The entire process—from pre-treatment planning to real-time visualization—is assisted by advanced imaging technologies. We are confident that histotripsy will have a meaningful impact for patients suffering from unresectable liver disease, including liver tumors, and we are excited to share this advancement with our patients and community.”  The HistoSonics Edison® System and histotripsy procedure allows for: Precision and Accuracy: Histotripsy targets only the tumor cells, sparing adjacent healthy tissue, which is particularly advantageous in treating tumors located near critical structures.  Non-Invasiveness: As a completely non-invasive procedure, histotripsy eliminates the need for incisions, resulting in less pain and potentially faster recovery times for patients.  Reduced Risk of Complications: With no need for surgical intervention, patients face a lower risk of infection, bleeding, and other post-operative complications commonly seen in more invasive procedures. Renown’s Commitment to Innovation “The introduction of histotripsy underscores Renown Health’s dedication to staying at the forefront of medical advancements,” says Bill Plauth, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “By continually investing in the latest technologies and treatment modalities, we can ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care - right here in Reno.” Clinical trial results recently shared by the company showed that physicians were able to achieve a technical success rate of 95.5% in targeting and destroying malignant tissue in 44 patients with either liver cancer or tumors that had spread to the liver from cancers based elsewhere in the body.  Thanks to the Generosity of Our Community  "Through the generosity of our community, we are working to provide the best expertise, technology and programs for our patients,” said Greg Walaitis, Chief Development Officer, Renown Health Foundation. “As the only charitable, not-for-profit integrated academic healthcare organization in Reno, we appreciate that our community has helped us further our healing mission."  For more information about supporting innovative clinical care at Renown Health, visit www.renown.org/Foundation. The FDA has not evaluated the Edison System for the treatment of any specific disease or condition. Use of Edison System in kidney applications is limited by federal law to investigational use.     About HistoSonics HistoSonics is a privately held medical device company developing non-invasive platforms and proprietary sonic beam therapy utilizing the science of histotripsy, a novel mechanism of action that uses focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy and liquify unwanted tissue and tumors. The company is currently focused on commercializing their Edison System in the US and select global markets for liver treatment while expanding histotripsy applications into other organs like kidney, pancreas, and others. HistoSonics has offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Minneapolis, MN.  About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit integrated health care network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and northeast California.
