Surgical Carotid Artery Interventions
- Carotid Endarterectomy - The surgical removal of plaque and/or clot build-up from the carotid artery in the neck, improving or restoring the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain.
- Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) - A minimally invasive procedure where a hollow mesh tube is guided to the narrowing in the carotid artery and placed with balloon guidance to open the narrowing.
Biplane 3-D imaging follows the path of blood flow, so the location of a neurological problem can be found quickly and precisely. If a life-threatening blockage is found, a catheter can be inserted through a major artery in the leg or arm directly to the stroke site in the brain. Then, a specialized team removes the clot. And for a hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in, or around the brain), coils can be placed to stop the bleeding.
The Penumbra System is available for stroke patients who are not candidates for the clot-busting drug t-PA. Interventional neuroradiologists can use biplane angiography to guide the Penumbra to a blood clot in the brain. The system removes the blockage using a microcatheter and unique separator system to restore circulation within the brain.
