Exceptional Talent Joins William N. Pennington Cancer Institute at Renown; Dr. Kate Ward Brings Expertise and Vision as Vice President of Oncology Division
Renown Health is pleased to announce that Kate A. Ward, Pharm.D., BCPS, has been promoted to serve as Vice President, Oncology for Renown Regional Medical Center. Dr. Ward has over fourteen years of service to the organization, most recently as Director of Clinical Pharmacy responsible for the oversight of all clinical pharmacy activities at Renown Regional Medical Center, Renown South Meadows Medical Center, and Renown Rehabilitation Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Ward is the Residency Director of the Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice Residency at Renown. Over the last decade at Renown, Dr. Ward has served as Pharmacy Clinical Manager, Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator and Clinical Pharmacist. Dr. Ward will bring her pharmacy clinical service experience (including ICU, Outpatient Infusion, Pediatrics, Oncology and Emergency Services), Inpatient Care, Clinical Research, and Hospital Formulary Management, Electronic Medical Record Integration and Optimization to this important new role. As a dyad partner with Max J. Coppes, MD, PhD, MBA, Director of the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute at Renown, she will bring her clinical, operational, regulatory, and administrative experience to lead the oncology division. Dr. Ward, Dr. Coppes and the dedicated team will advance Renown’s mission to expand care, prevention, screening, research, and education with the goal of establishing the first National Institutes of Health, NCI designated Cancer Center for our State. “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ward as our new Vice President of Oncology. She brings a wealth of experience and a passion for advancing patient care. Dr. Ward will play a pivotal role in sharing the future our oncology division and furthering our commitment to providing exceptional care,” said Chris Nicholas, CEO of Renown Regional Medical Center. As a licensed pharmacist, Dr. Ward holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center. The Pharm.D. is a professional degree like a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). As a doctorate, it represents the increasing responsibility pharmacists have in healthcare systems and the high trust Americans have in pharmacists. Dr. Ward completed her residency at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with her bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences. Dr. Ward is active in several professional associations and currently serves as a Pharmacy Board member for HealthTrust; Vice Chair of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists® Council on Therapeutics; and Vice Chair for the Silver State Scripts Board for the State of Nevada. Dr. Ward was the 2022 recipient of the Nevada Society of Health System Pharmacists (NVSHP) President’s Award. Radiation Therapy
Renown Health's Institute for Cancer has the most advanced radiation therapy system of its kind and the first program in the region with American College of Radiology (ACR-RO) accreditation. To serve you, our certified team of experts includes highly trained doctors, medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and registered nurses. What is Radiation Therapy? A common form of cancer treatment, radiation therapy uses high-energy particles to eliminate cancerous cells and may be used in conjunction with other treatments, like chemotherapy or surgery. What to Expect Treating cancer with radiation is a process that usually lasts about five to eight weeks. The first two appointments are consultation, simulation, and mapping, which help plan treatment. Short, daily radiation treatment appointments follow these. Why Choose Renown? Renown's state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam radiation therapy system delivers treatment so precisely; it reaches sub-millimeter levels of accuracy. In addition, unlike other treatment centers in the region, Renown has the technology to deliver radiation from 360 degrees around the patient's body, allowing us to target cancerous cells and save healthy tissue. Consultation The first appointment is called the consultation. A radiation oncologist meets with the patient to discuss treatment options, perform a physical examination and answer questions. Simulation and Mapping Since radiation therapy aims to target cancer while sparing healthy tissue, to maintain body position and stillness is essential. A CT scan is used to pinpoint cancer's exact location in the patient's body during the simulation and mapping appointment. Doctors refer to these scans as they work together to craft a treatment plan. Patients are fitted with immobilization devices that keep the body still during treatment. In addition, brain and head, and neck cancer patients are equipped with a mesh mask to keep the head and neck in position. For cancers elsewhere in the body, patients are fitted with foam molds that form to the body. These personalized molds are kept on hand for use during daily radiation treatments. Additionally, the radiation therapist creates several pinpoint-sized tattoos on the patient's skin to ensure each daily treatment targets the same area. These tattoos are permanent but small enough to go unnoticed by others. Daily Radiation Treatments At each treatment appointment, a radiation therapist helps the patient.

Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer Screening & Prevention In the United States, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. While the exact causes of prostate cancer are still unknown, certain risk factors are linked to the disease, increasing a person's chance of developing prostate cancer. Risk Factors Age: Men over 50 are at more risk. Race: For unknown reasons, prostate cancer is more common in African American Men. Family history: Men with a first-degree relative (father/brother) are more likely to be diagnosed. Prevalence in the family: Men with one first-degree relative should talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening by age 45; men with multiple family members diagnosed should speak with their doctor by age 40. Diet: A diet high in red meat, dairy products, and saturated fat may increase the risk for prostate cancer. If you are concerned about prostate cancer because you meet one or more risk factors, talk to your doctor about a screening. Screening Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test The prostate gland naturally produces a protein called prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However, higher-than-normal levels of PSA can be an indication of a problem with the prostate gland. These problems could range from prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) to prostate cancer. To test for PSA levels, doctors administer a blood test. The results are measured in nanograms of PSA per milliliter of blood. The higher the patient's PSA per ng/mL, the more likely he is to have prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about when you should begin PSA screenings. Digital Rectal Exam Men with a high PSA reading accompanied by other symptoms of prostate cancer may also have a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE). During this exam, the doctor will insert a gloved, lubricated finger (digit) into the rectum to check for enlargement of or growths on the prostate.

Lung Cancer

Pennington Cancer Institute has been named a Screening Center of Excellence by GO2 Foundation Screening Center of Excellence for our ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening. Prevention Most lung cancer cases stem from a history of smoking tobacco, but there are other known causes. You can take steps to eliminate some of the causes from your lifestyle and environment, such as: Tobacco smoke: The most critical step you can take to prevent lung cancer is to avoid tobacco smoke altogether, including secondhand smoke. Radon: This chemical element occurs naturally in the environment. It’s odorless and colorless, which means testing is the only way to determine if it’s present in your home. Radon testing kits and radon mitigation systems are available at retailers. Radon test kits are available through the Nevada Radon Education Program. Asbestos: This fibrous mineral causes cancer and other diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestosis. If you suspect your home contains asbestos, contact a local asbestos testing and removal service. Diesel exhaust: Avoid exposure to diesel fumes. The World Health Organization found that diesel exhaust causes not only lung cancer but also other cancers. Chemical exposure: Always take the necessary steps to protect yourself from inhaling harmful particles, fumes, and gasses by wearing appropriately rated masks or respirators.
