Patient Condition Inquiry
We follow regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) for all patients, including patients of public interest. HIPAA regulations specify which information may and may not be released without authorization from a patient.
Patient privacy regulations allow us to only share patient condition information about patients that appear in our directory.
Media inquiries require correct spelling of the patient's first and last name.
Definitions of "Condition" used by Renown Health
When describing a patient's condition, we can only release the following patient statuses:
Good - Vital signs such as pulse, temperature and blood pressure are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, comfortable and there are no complications.
Fair - Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and alert although may be uncomfortable or in pain and may have minor complications.
Serious - Vital signs may be unstable or outside normal limits. The patient is acutely ill or injured and may have major complications.
Critical - Vital signs are unstable or outside normal limits. There are major complications.
Note: "Stable" is not a condition.

UNR Med's Savitt Medical Library Expands with Additional Location at Renown Regional Medical Center
The library will have 24/7 access for UNR Med students and Renown Health employees. Today, the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and Renown Health announced the opening of a new satellite location of the Savitt Medical Library at Renown Regional Medical Center. This new space will serve as a valuable resource for UNR Med students and Renown Health employees and physicians. The Savitt Medical Library's new satellite library will be accessible 24/7 to all Renown employees, physicians and UNR Med students who possess valid badges. The space features four computers—two connected to the Renown network and two to the UNR Med network—requiring appropriate credentials for login. “The Renown Health and UNR Med academic affiliation advances our mission of supporting the health of the people and communities we serve by advancing medical innovation, expanding upon clinical research and improving access to quality care,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO, Renown Health. “The Savitt Medical Library at Renown Regional Medical Center highlights the value of the academic affiliation by providing Renown employees and physicians access to leading-edge resources and education within the heart of Renown Regional Medical Center.” In addition to its digital resources, the library offers a small collection of print books for in-library use. The facility will be staffed part-time by a librarian who is available to assist with reference questions and in-depth literature searching. In addition to the new satellite location at Renown Regional Medical Center, the library operates a second satellite at the UNR Med Moana Clinic. The main library, named in honor of Sol and Ella Savitt, was initially known as the Life and Health Sciences Library and has a long history of supporting medical education and research. Renown and Great Basin College Launch 18-month Respiratory Therapist Training Program
Training respiratory therapists as part of a healthcare team to help diagnose, treat and manage conditions to help restore or maintain lung and breathing function. Applications due Oct. 31, 2024 Great Basin College and Renown Health are partnering to bring the first Respiratory Therapy training program to educate new healthcare professionals to meet the growing needs of the community. With the generosity of grant funders, the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and the Health Resources and Services Administration, Great Basin College will launch the first and only available program of its kind in support of several rural northern Nevada communities. According to project leads, the program and the trained respiratory therapists will bring great value to the community and healthcare system. “Great Basin College is thrilled to join forces with Renown Health to launch this new program and be a critical contributor to advancing the respiratory care profession for our community,” says Interim GBC President Dr. Amber Donnelli. The program is an accelerated 18-month program resulting in an Associate of Applied Science in Cardio-Respiratory Care Science degree. It's incredibly high-tech, uses leading-edge training equipment, and provides real-world experience to students. In-person classes will be offered at GBC campuses in Elko and Winnemucca and at Renown Health in Reno. Applications will open this June and are due October 31, 2024. The first program courses will begin in the Spring of 2025. Reno Home to Analytics and Data Science Expert of The Year
Justin Coran, PhD, MPH, Chief Analytics Officer of Renown Health, Reno’s only not-for-profit, charitable health care network, is one of 100 senior leaders in data science to be nationally recognized, and the only expert from Nevada to win an AI100 Award celebrating the achievements of those making significant advancements in the field of Analytics, Data Science & AI. “These leaders demonstrate leadership in the development and deployment of AI technologies in their industry, innovative thinking and contributions that have advanced the field of Analytics and have a track record of measurable impact with their teams, such as improved business outcomes, increased efficiency, and improved quality of life for customers,” AIM stated. Dr. Coran joined Renown Health in 2023 as Chief Analytics Officer and was appointed as an adjunct professor for the University of Reno School of Medicine. Leading a division of nearly 60 professionals, Dr. Coran is responsible for creating the strategy and vision for data engineering, data analytics, and data science. He completed his graduate training at the University of Florida where he received his Doctoral degree in medical sociology and Master of Public Health degree in hospital administration and epidemiology. Renown Health Announces Nariman Rahimzadeh, MD, FASA as Vice President, Medical Affairs for South Meadows
Renown Health, Nevada’s largest, not-for-profit integrated academic healthcare network, is delighted to announce Nariman Rahimzadeh, MD, FASA as the new Vice President, Medical Affairs for Renown South Meadows Medical Center, effective immediately. Dr. Rahimzadeh is a highly respected physician leader with an extensive background in medical leadership and a proven track record of enhancing patient care, driving clinical excellence and fostering a People First culture of collaboration. As part of a larger reorganization of the physician executive oversight of Renown Health’s hospitals, he will dedicate 30% of his time to this position while continuing to actively practice as an anesthesiologist. As VP of Medical Affairs, Renown South Meadows Medical Center, Dr. Rahimzadeh will collaborate with Dr. Bill Plauth, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine; and the yet to be filled, Vice President of Medical Affairs, Renown Regional Medical Center to support Medical and Advanced Practice Provider Staff. Together with Renown clinical and operational leaders, he will help ensure the highest standards of patient care, patient experience, and highly reliable quality and safety. Over the course of 11 years, Dr. Rahimzadeh has served as Medical Director for Surgical Services and Chief of Staff for Renown South Meadows Medical Center. Dr. Rahimzadeh will maintain his administrative and clinical responsibilities as an anesthesiologist with anesthesiology|NV. Dr. Rahimzadeh currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and is past President of the Nevada State Society of Anesthesiologists. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA). A first-generation American who began his career at Renown (then Washoe Medical Center) as a shuttle bus driver, Dr. Rahimzadeh completed his bachelor’s degree in Pre-Medicine at the University of Nevada-Reno and is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine in Florida. He completed two residency programs at the University of Connecticut in both Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine. He returned home to Reno as a private practice anesthesiologist in 2007. Renown Health and northern Nevada are undergoing a period of tremendous growth. Renown Health Launches Free Childbirth Classes for Expectant Parents
Renown Health is excited to announce the launch of free pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood and grandparent classes. Beginning this month, Renown’s comprehensive selection of childbirth education and support for expecting and new parents is now available to all in the community as a free resource, and as part of Renown’s community benefit mission. “As Reno’s only not-for-profit, integrated academic health care organization we are constantly investing in essential community benefits and services. Our goal is to enhance access to prenatal care and childbirth education to help improve health outcomes for mothers and children in Washoe County,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO for Renown Health. “By offering these free classes, we look to provide parents with the knowledge and support they need to confidently welcome their babies into the world, and to raise healthy children.” "We are thrilled to offer childbirth classes to our community at no cost. We recognize the profound health benefits these classes provide, not only to expectant mothers, but to their families and the broader public,” says Jennifer Timmons, RN, Nursing Manager for Postpartum and the Newborn Nursery at Renown. “We want to promote healthier pregnancies and foster stronger, more resilient families. By removing financial barriers, we hope to reach and support every expecting parent in Washoe County.” All Classes are now FREE including: Pregnancy & Birth Class. An all-in-one day childbirth education course offered virtually or in-person, or a 7 Week in-person Thursday series childbirth preparation class, prepares mom and her partner for the many aspects of childbirth, postpartum, infant care and breastfeeding education. Certified instructors offer support and guidance to meet individual needs. Comfort Measures for Birth Class. In this two-hour session, expecting parents learn labor coping skills including relaxation/meditation practice, breathing techniques, massage and acupressure. Spinning Babies Parent Class. A four-hour class designed for expecting moms after the 20th week of pregnancy. This class highlights rotating the baby down and out of the pelvis. Preparing for Postpartum Virtual Class. This 2-hour class helps prepare mom and partner on what to expect after birth and the weeks that follow, the difference between postpartum blues and postpartum depression, mother’s warning signs and adjustments once you return home. Breastfeeding Basics and Beyond Class. In this class taught by an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, mothers get off to a better start with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding Circle Gathering encourages breastfeeding moms to find support, exchange experiences, and discuss any concerns. Popular topics include milk supply, pumping, returning to work, sleeping, or lack of sleep, weight and more. Nurturing Your Newborn. This 2 in 1 class includes the Newborn Care Class and Breastfeeding Basics and Beyond. The morning portion of this class includes breastfeeding benefits and techniques. The afternoon segment covers newborn appearances and behavior, daily care, signs of illness, and when to call the doctor. Tummy time, comfort and soothing techniques, how to keep your baby safe, newborn screenings are discussed. Partners are encouraged to attend. Baby Safe Class. This class helps prepare parents for emergencies that may occur in baby’s first year. Along with car seat safety and basic baby proofing, discussion will include basic first aid, prevention and treatment of common injuries. Grandparents and other caregivers are welcome to attend. Infant & Child CPR Class; This course is ideal for schools and students, new parents, grandparents, babysitters, and others interested in learning how to save a life. Maternal and Child Health: A Community Benefit Focus Area, 2025-2027 Renown Health’s Community Benefit Health Focus Areas are based on primary and secondary research collected as part of the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). The CHNA includes input from community stakeholders representing the broad interests of the diverse communities served by Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center, including those stakeholders with expertise in community and public health. Health needs were identified in the CHNA and subsequently prioritized by community stakeholders. From the prioritized health needs, Health Focus Areas were chosen based on criteria that consider the Renown Health’s team capacity to impact community needs, the strength of community partnerships and the alignment with Renown’s organizational strategic planning efforts. Through this Implementation Strategy, Renown Health is committed to identifying and closing health equity gaps in communities that are historically marginalized and vulnerable. Amy McGaha, MD, MPH, FAAFP Appointed Chair of Family and Community Medicine
Amy McGaha, MD, MPH, FAAFP has joined the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and Renown Health as department chair of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. McGaha comes to Nevada from Omaha, Nebraska where she served as the Roland L. Kleeberger, MD professor and chair for the Creighton University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. Dr. McGaha previously served as the assistant director of medical education for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the professional membership association for family physicians, working to develop family medicine workforce and medical education. She has also served on the Board of Trustees for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and on the board for CHI Health, the clinical partner of Creighton University School of Medicine. Prior to those appointments, Dr. McGaha provided inpatient and outpatient care for Freeman Health Systems in Missouri. Samuel Austin Lee, M.D., Ph.D., FIDSA has joined the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and Renown Health as Department Chair of Internal Medicine. Dr. Lee comes to Nevada from New England, where he served as Chief of Medicine for the White River Junction (VT) Veteran’s Administration Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr. Lee previously served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a member of the San Antonio Center for Medical Mycology. He next served on the faculty for University of New Mexico, as Section Chief, Infectious Diseases at the VA Albuquerque Medical Center, and as Medical Director of the HIV clinic at the VA Albuquerque. He completed his internship and residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He then trained in a three-year research track fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Yale University School of Medicine and continued at Yale as a Staff Physician at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. He obtained his Ph.D. in Investigative Medicine in Yale University’s Graduate School. Dr. Lee’s research explores fungal pathogenesis, secretion, virulence, biofilm formation and antifungal drug discovery. His laboratory work, which has been supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Department of Veterans Affairs Merit awards, involves research on fungal pathogenesis, novel antifungal therapies and treatment approaches against biofilm formation in Candida species, including drug repurposing, high-throughput screening of small molecule compound libraries, and studies of antifungal lock therapies for prevention of catheter-associated infections. Dr. Lee is recognized for his passion for high-quality patient care and supports future practitioners through rigorous and culturally informed undergraduate and graduate medical education, research, and community collaboration. He maintains active involvement in national committees and editorial boards including Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, Plos ONE, Mycopathologia, Virulence, and The Journal of Mycology and is a member of the Peer Review Board for the Journal of Visualized Experiments. Dr. Lee was awarded the New Mexico School of Medicine Regents’ Lecturer Award in recognition of his contributions to clinical medicine, research and education. Samuel K. Weller Appointed CEO for Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Renown Rehabilitation Hospital

The position was formerly held by Chris Nicholas, FACHE, who was promoted in March 2022 to serve as CEO of 808-bed Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
