UNR Med and Renown Chair of Psychiatry Talks About Asking, Listening and Reminding Others They Are Not Alone In Their Fight

During September, Suicide Prevention Month, Dr. Takesha Cooper shares her thoughts on how you can support others As we observe National Suicide Prevention Month this September, Renown Health and University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine reaffirm a commitment to addressing mental health challenges and preventing comprehensive support to those at risk of suicide. Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues. Takesha Cooper, MD, MS, FAPA, Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine and Chief, Behavioral Health - Renown Health, Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute, underscores the importance of creating safe spaces, listening without judgement and reminding others that they are not alone in their fight. “I frequently engage in conversations about suicide, a topic that touches many aspects of my life and work. As a psychiatrist, I have the privilege of sitting with my patients as they share their painful suicidal thoughts, and I strive to create a space where they feel safe to express their feelings openly and withoutjudgment. As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I share the concerns of parents who worry deeply about their teens’ overwhelming emotions, self-injury, and feelings of hopelessness. Together, we work on simply validating their child's experiences, even when the instinct as a parent is to try and 'fix' things. As a mother, I can’t help but think about my own children and their peers, many of whom are grappling with depression and anxiety, especially in the wake of the pandemic. And as a teacher of resident physicians, I guide my learners in recognizing the signs of suicide in their patients and ensuring they have the tools to offer support and safety.” Providing care and support has always been my priority, but I also recognize that mental health is a complex journey, and everyone faces unique struggles. My training, and a deep respect for what my patients have taught me, allow me to navigate difficult conversations about hopelessness, but I believe the most crucial part of my role is simply being present, listening without judgment, and reminding people that they're not alone in their fight.” As we observe Suicide Prevention Month this September, I am reminded of the profound impact that simply asking and listening can have. While it might seem that 'just listening' isn’t enough, it is often the very thing that helps our patients and loved ones feel truly seen and supported.” #988; #Talk about it; #Listen; #Suicide Prevention Reno is Home to One of the Top Psychiatry and Mental Health Programs in U.S. Recently honored by Becker's Healthcare as one of the top psychiatry and mental health programs in the U.S., the integrated team at the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown Health on 85 Kirman Avenue in Reno, has an unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health challenges. The team of experienced psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and nurses is dedicated to supporting you and your family through every step of your journey to wellness. Services Include: Personalized mental health care Psychological and psychiatric assessments Outpatient medication management and therapy for adults and youth Substance abuse treatment Individual, couples, family, and group counseling Medication management and treatment Appointments can be made by calling 775-982-2862. Other services include the SOAR early intervention treatment program for those experiencing their first episode of psychosis. A 24-hour crisis stabilization center will open in 2024 for adults with mental health or substance use issues. The Connect Washoe County mental health collaborative, part of the hospital’s community benefit program, hosts the Youth Mental Health Summit, with a number of interventions resulting in reduced use of street and prescription drugs, lower hospitalization rates due to opioid overdose, and fewer cases of intentional suicide mortality in youth. “We will continue to strive for excellence and address the diverse needs of individuals struggling with behavioral health issues, says Takesha Cooper, MD, Department Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “Our team comprises skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and support staff who collaborate to provide holistic and integrated care for our patients. As the region’s only not-for-profit health system, together with the support of grateful donors like Stacie Mathewson, we will continue to actively engage in outreach initiatives to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and create a community that fosters healing and support.”   About the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med), Nevada’s first public medical school, is a community-based, research-intensive medical school with a statewide vision for a healthy Nevada. Renown and Great Basin College Launch 18-month Respiratory Therapist Training Program

Training respiratory therapists as part of a healthcare team to help diagnose, treat and manage conditions to help restore or maintain lung and breathing function. Applications due Oct. 31, 2024 Great Basin College and Renown Health are partnering to bring the first Respiratory Therapy training program to educate new healthcare professionals to meet the growing needs of the community.   With the generosity of grant funders, the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and the Health Resources and Services Administration, Great Basin College will launch the first and only available program of its kind in support of several rural northern Nevada communities. According to project leads, the program and the trained respiratory therapists will bring great value to the community and healthcare system.  “Great Basin College is thrilled to join forces with Renown Health to launch this new program and be a critical contributor to advancing the respiratory care profession for our community,” says Interim GBC President Dr. Amber Donnelli.  The program is an accelerated 18-month program resulting in an Associate of Applied Science in Cardio-Respiratory Care Science degree. It's incredibly high-tech, uses leading-edge training equipment, and provides real-world experience to students.  In-person classes will be offered at GBC campuses in Elko and Winnemucca and at Renown Health in Reno. Applications will open this June and are due October 31, 2024. The first program courses will begin in the Spring of 2025. There are very specific prerequisites for the program and students can visit the program page for more information.“Investing in the training of new respiratory therapists is crucial to meeting Renown’s mission of providing essential services for our community,” says Brian Erling, MD, MBA, CEO & President, Renown Health. “These professionals help patients manage respiratory conditions and their expertise makes a difference in the lives of others. By equipping them with the latest knowledge and hands-on experience, we ensure that our patients receive the best possible care during their most crucial moments. Respiratory therapists are important members of the critical care team, which is why we are proud to partner with Great Basin College to establish the first training program for our region."According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the “employment of respiratory therapists is projected to grow 13 percent from 2022 to 2032.” GBC sees the incredible potential for growth and has worked hard to bring this opportunity to Nevada’s health care workforce.  “This vital program will support our health care systems through innovative teaching strategies geared towards developing the highest caliber respiratory therapist,” says Jason Farnsworth, GBC Respiratory Therapy Program Director and Director of Respiratory Care Services at Renown Health. The Associate of Applied Science Cardio-Respiratory Care Science program will be offered at Great Basin College at the Elko, Winnemucca, and Reno locations and is currently in the process of seeking CoARC accreditation for a respiratory care program. However Great Basin College can provide no assurance that accreditation will be granted by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) 264 Precision Blvd, Telford, TN 37690 (817) 283-2835. Accreditation is presumed to be finalized around November 2024.      About Great Basin College Great Basin College, "The Gold Standard in the Silver State,” offers associate and baccalaureate level education in academic, career and technical fields. Groundbreaking Historic Milestone: ECMO Program for Region's Critically Ill Patients Now Available at Renown Health

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation technology (ECMO) for patients with severe heart or respiratory failure is now available locally thanks to a grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust  Renown Health, the Level II Trauma Center for the region and the leader in offering the most innovative treatments for critically ill adults and children, is now home to northern Nevada’s first and only comprehensive extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program.  The ECMO machines arrived at the Cardiac ICU at Renown Regional Medical Center this week, and the multidisciplinary team of highly specialized physicians, Critical Care intensivists, Cardiovascular surgeons, perfusionists, registered nurses and therapists are ready to provide minute-by-minute support for patients receiving ECMO treatment. The multidisciplinary ECMO team includes pharmacists and respiratory therapists who are ready to receive their first patient. “At Renown Health, we are constantly investing in our clinicians, essential services, and medical innovations to help keep care local. Access to health care—both preventive care and advanced treatment—is critical for a community’s well-being and optimal health,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO for Renown Health. “We are incredibly grateful for the Helmsley Charitable Trust and their $3.5-million grant to help establish the first ECMO program for the region at Renown. ECMO saves lives. Neighbors in need of ECMO life-support can now stay close to home and loved ones, and no longer need to be transported to facilities outside our area for this type of advanced care.” What is ECMO? “ECMO is a life support technology for patients with the most severe heart and lung illnesses,” explains Richard King, MD, FACEP Division Chief- Critical Care Medicine at Renown Health and Co-Medical Director of the ECMO program. “At Renown, our technology allows a patient's heart and lungs to heal and recover from illnesses, diseases, and injuries the body has sustained. The ECMO machine is a portable life-support system used for severe cases of heart and lungfailure. The ECMO procedure provides minimally invasive heart-lung bypass support outside of the body. The machine then removes carbon dioxide from the patient’s blood and adds oxygen. Basically, ECMO serves as your heart and lungs, supplying blood with oxygen and pumped back into the body, allowing your own organs to rest and to help the impaired function.” Why is ECMO important in saving lives?  “This state-of-the-art procedure can save lives in cases that otherwise would offer little chance of survival and can act as a bridge to those needing heart or lung transplants,” says Dr. Kimball Knackstedt, Cardiovascular surgeon, Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health, and Co-Medical Director of the ECMO program. “ECMO can be a game changer and a last resort for patients with severe heart and lung conditions. The procedure isn’t for everyone. ECMO requires anticoagulation, so a common complication is bleeding. This makes the therapy complex for trauma patients who often have life threatening heart and lung failure but due to severe bleeding, cannot utilize ECMO. We look forward to providing care for patients who are too unstable for transport and who could die before receiving needed care.” "Renown Health serves more than one million patients in a 100,000-square mile reach across Nevada, Lake Tahoe and eastern California. The Helmsley Charitable Trust grant to the Renown Health Foundation will help give severe respiratory distress and cardiogenic shock patients a greater chance of survival and lessen the need for risky and lengthy transfers out of the community,” said Taralynn Bassham, BSN, Director of Nursing, Critical Care. “This investment in critical life support technology enables the best chance of survival for our patients suffering severe heart and/or lung failure during their most critical moments. This is truly a gift of life for many.”  ECMO programs growing across the U.S.  ECMO technology was developed in the late 1960s by a team led by Robert H. Bartlett, MD. Its main purpose was to serve as a long-term “bypass machine” to support the lungs or heart, which was not feasible at that time with conventional bypass machines. ECMO was first used successfully in 1971 by a patient with severe lung dysfunction after a motorcycle accident. In 1976, it was also used successfully for a baby who had severe lung injury from meconium aspiration, which led to increased use in the pediatric population. In 2009, ECMO was used worldwide in the treatment of severe lung failure during the H1N1 influenza pandemic. More than 100 new ECMO programs were launched in the U.S. in the last 3-5 years. Today, there are 6,120 hospitals in the U.S. and only 300 to 400 with ECMO programs according to the American Medical Association.  “We are launching our ECMO program with the capability to support up to 2 patients simultaneously for the first 1-2 years and aim to eventually perform 40 cases annually,” said Rob Blamire, Enterprise Project Manager for Renown. “Initially, we will focus on adult patients and later expand to include pediatric care. Depending on a patient’s needs, ECMO support varies from several days to weeks. The entire Renown team takes immense pride in introducing this leading-edge life support technology to our community, benefiting area patients and their families.”  What conditions may ECMO support help treat? There are several conditions extracorporeal life support can aid in treating, such as: Adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); Burns (smoke inhalation); Cardiogenic shock; Heart attack; Respiratory failure; Myocarditis; Pulmonary embolism;Sepsis; and as a “bridge” to transplant. Supported by Innovative ECMO Concepts  “We appreciate the partnership with the team at Innovative ECMO Concepts, a leading provider of ECMO who specialize in providing support for launching and refining ECMO programs,” said Bill Plauth, MD, MMM, CPE, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. "From initial consultation to working bedside, staff training, and ongoing program evaluation, IEC’s comprehensive approach has ensured seamless integration and optimal outcomes for patients. “We are proud to help set a new standard in patient care and safety in northern Nevada through Renown’s ECMO program,” comments Dr. John Mehall, Chief Medical Officer at IEC. “This achievement is a testament to the team’s unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for patients requiring ECMO therapy.” Thank you to The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust "This life-support procedure would not be possible without the generosity of The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The Trust's ongoing support for Renown Health and our community helps us further our healing mission," said Greg Walaitis, Chief Development Officer, Renown Health Foundation. If you are a hospital or referring provider and want more information about our ECMO program, please contact the Renown Operations & Transfer Center.  For media interviews, contact news@renown.org or 775-691-7308. Reno Rodeo Foundation Grants Three Rodeo Wishes to Renown Children’s Hospital Patients and Families

Pictured Above: Rodeo Wish recipients stand with representatives from the Reno Rodeo Foundation and Renown Children’s Hospital at the E.L. Wiegand Pavilion at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. The Reno Rodeo Foundation has once again demonstrated its commitment to improving the lives of local children with its annual “Rodeo Wish” program. This year, the Foundation is funding the wishes of three young patients at Renown Children’s Hospital with $36,000 in funding. Renown Children’s Hospital is northern Nevada’s only dedicated pediatric hospital with a 24/7 Children’s Emergency Room and a Level II American College of Surgeons Trauma Center designation.  “We are grateful to the Reno Rodeo Foundation and their Reno Rodeo Wish program which assists young people who have unique and extraordinary life and medical needs,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Renown Health. “This program helps improve the quality of life for both patients and families, through granting their ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ wishes. All of us at Renown are inspired by our patients and families; and thrilled that three families will benefit from this generous donation. We appreciate the community’s trust and partnership in improving the health and well-being of children.” “Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children facing medical challenges,” said Debby Herman, Reno Rodeo Foundation Board President. “By granting these wishes, we provide financial support and memorable experiences that offer comfort and happiness.” “Renown Children’s Hospital is dedicated to improving the health of our pediatric patients, and committed to the welfare, happiness and comfort of every child entrusted to our care,” said Kristina Deeter, MD, MBA, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics (UNR Med) and Physician-in-Chief, Renown Children’s Hospital. “The Rodeo Wish program demonstrates the importance of inspiring hope for children experiencing extraordinary health conditions that require acute care. These meaningful donations from the Reno Rodeo Foundation highlight our community’s deep-rooted ties with Renown Children’s Hospital.” Since its inception in 2003, the Rodeo Wish program has selected children nominated by local hospitals to receive funding for special wishes that significantly improve their quality of life. This year, every patient receiving a gift was nominated by a care provider at Renown Children’s Hospital. The surprises were revealed at a heartwarming event held in Fianna’s Healing Garden at Renown Regional Medical Center on Monday, June 10. Becky Haase, RN, Renown Health Director of Nursing, Women and Children’s Services, has witnessed the lasting impact of the Rodeo Wish program on the lives of Children’s Hospital patients over the last 21 years. “The Reno Rodeo Foundation grants gifts that help build positive and lasting memories for our young patients and their brave families. It is inspiring to see the hopeful and excited smiles on the children’s faces during the announcements. We are grateful to the Reno Rodeo Foundation for their continued support,” Haase said. “We are deeply honored to bring joy and support to these incredible children and their families,” said Cheree Boteler, Executive Director of the Reno Rodeo Foundation. “Each wish granted this week reflects the community’s spirit of generosity and the unwavering dedication of everyone involved with the Reno Rodeo Foundation.” The Reno Rodeo Wish recipients will be recognized as V.I.P.s during the Reno Rodeo with a special presentation in the arena on Tuesday, June 25. Renown Health, the leading health care system in northern Nevada, today announced its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Strategy & Implementation Plan for 2025-2027 for Washoe County. The Plan and Community Benefit Health Focus Areas for 2025-2027 are based on the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) as required for all not-for-profit hospitals. The Assessment is conducted every three years to gain a better understanding of the health needs of the communities Renown Health serves and to address healthcare inequities. The CHNA includes an analysis of input from community stakeholders who represent the broad interests of the diverse communities served by the Renown hospitals including those with expertise in community and public health. Health needs were identified in the CHNA research and subsequently prioritized by community stakeholders. From the prioritized health needs, Health Focus Areas were chosen based on criteria that consider the Renown Health’s team capacity to impact community needs, the strength of community partnerships and the alignment with Renown’s organizational strategic planning efforts. Through this Implementation Strategy & Plan, Renown Health is committed to identifying and closing health equity gaps in communities that are historically marginalized and vulnerable. The 2025–2027 Health Focus Areas include; Mental Health: Based on the secondary data scoring results, Mental Health was again ranked as a high need topic area in Washoe County. This health topic area includes indicators such as Poor Mental Health: 14+ Days, Teens who have Attempted Suicide, Adults Ever Diagnosed with Depression, Intentional Injury (Suicide) Mortality Rate and Teens who Felt Sad or Hopeless. Access to Health Care and Community Services: Community Benefit efforts focus on increasing and supporting access to essential health care and community services for communities and groups that have been historically underserved through direct programs and partnerships with other local not-for-profit community-based organizations. The Access to Care effort is grounded in the knowledge that social determinants of health and health equity impact health outcomes. Indicators include Children without Health Insurance, Adults Unable to Afford to See a Doctor and Physician Provider Rates. Maternal and Child Health: The Infant Mortality Rate for Washoe County is on the rise and Maternal and Child Health indicators are worsening. Both Primary and Secondary Data collection for the CHNA process showed this health need as a priority for the community. Improvements in health care services, access to prenatal care, and education on maternal and child health can help to decrease the infant mortality rate and improve the health outcomes for mothers and children in Washoe County. Collaboration between healthcare providers, community organizations and government agencies can also lead to more effective interventions and solutions. By working together, a positive impact on the health and well being of our community can be sustained. Priority Geography Renown Health is a healthcare provider serving multiple communities in northern Nevada and eastern California, located east of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The primary focus of Renown Health is to provide health care services to residents of the Reno -Sparks area, which is situated in Washoe County. Renown Health includes Renown Regional Medical Center, an 826-bed full service regional hospital located at 1155 Mill St., Reno, NV, 89502. The Community Benefit Service Area is Washoe County which has a population of 502,193 residents, making it the second most populous county in Nevada. Community Health Needs are greatest in zip codes: 89412, 89405, 89510, 89424, 89442, 89508, 89506, 89502, 89439, 89434, 89521, 89511, 89451, 89704. Over 90% of the county's population lives in the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, which has undergone significant growth in the last decade. Although most patients reside in Washoe County, Renown Health serves an area of 100,000 square miles and many rural communities across northern Nevada. The health needs and outcomes in Washoe County are significantly impacted by the demographic composition of the region. To address these needs, the CHNA comprehensively assessed population dynamics, considering aspects such as age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, among other factors. By acknowledging the unique health requirements of various groups and communities, targeted interventions are being developed that address specific health disparities. The BARHII Framework and CMS Framework for Health Equity ensure that the initiatives and identified health needs are based on a true understanding of the root causes of health disparities and effectiveness in Renown’s community health initiatives. Renown Health provides a significant benefit to the region, providing 66.5% of the care for the Reno/Sparks market. As the same time, Renown provides 72.7% of the Medicaid and uninsured care provided to the region. Reno Home to "Great Psychiatry and Mental Health Program;" Renown and UNR School of Medicine Named to Becker's National List

Becker’s list of Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Psychiatry and Mental Health Programs for 2023 has been published, recognizing professional healthcare leaders across the country.    Renown Health and the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine have been recognized among the top programs in the United States. This acknowledgement reflects a commitment from a dedicated team of experienced local professionals providing comprehensive mental health services and advancing the field of psychiatry.    In their announcement, Becker’s highlighted that, “In 2018, a $6 million donation (by the Stacie Mathewson Foundation), funded the creation of the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown Health. The institute was formed to address increased prescription drug-related mortality rates and suicide rates in northern Nevada. The department is now fully integrated with University of Nevada School of Medicine's psychiatry residency, child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship programs, and behavioral sciences and clinical psychiatry medical student training. The curriculum emphasizes the value of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and interventional psychiatry methods, along with primary care team integration.”   Becker’s editors noted that, “Innovative public and private partnerships with the state include the SOAR early intervention treatment program for those experiencing their first episode of psychosis. A 24-hour crisis stabilization center will open in 2024 for adults with mental health or substance use issues. The Connect Washoe County mental health collaborative, part of the hospital’s community benefit program, hosts the Youth Mental Health Summit, with a number of interventions resulting in reduced use of street and prescription drugs, lower hospitalization rates due to opioid overdose, and fewer cases of intentional suicide mortality in youth.”    “We are honored to be recognized as one of the top psychiatry and mental health programs in the U.S. This achievement reflects the dedication of our integrated team and our unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health challenges. We will continue to strive for excellence and address the diverse needs of individuals struggling with behavioral health issues, said Takesha Cooper, MD, Department Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “Our team comprises skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and support staff who collaborate to provide holistic and integrated care for our patients. As the region’s only not-for-profit health system, together with the support of grateful donors like Stacie Mathewson, we will continue to actively engage in outreach initiatives to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and create a community that fosters healing and support.”  Renown Health also earned Forbes' Best Healthcare Employer in Nevada for combatting burnout and ensuring well-being and safety of caregivers. Renown Health Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Certified by American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Renown Health is proud to announce the certification of its pulmonary rehabilitation program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification is recognition of Renown Health’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms, long COVID-19) recover faster and live healthier. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, COPD impacts 16 million people across the United States, and 1 in 13 adults (7.5%) have “long COVID” symptoms, defined as symptoms lasting three or more months after first contracting the virus, and that they didn’t have prior to their COVID-19 infection. "We are thrilled to receive this certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation for our pulmonary rehabilitation program at Renown South Meadows Medical Center. This recognition underscores Renown Health's unwavering dedication to providing the highest standards of care and improving the lives of our patients, no matter what life throws at them,” said Sam Weller, MHPA CEO of Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Renown Rehabilitation Hospital. “Our commitment to excellence shines through in every aspect of our programs, and this certification reinforces our ongoing mission to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of the people of northern Nevada." To earn this accreditation, Renown Health’s pulmonary rehabilitation program participated in an application process that requires extensive documentation of the program’s practices. AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other related professional societies. Each program’s application is reviewed by the AACVPR Program Certification Committee, and certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors. "At Renown Health, our pulmonary rehabilitation program is designed with our patients in mind. Our focus includes physical exercise, extending to education, counseling and support for both patients and their families,” said John Lynn, Manager of Respiratory Services at Renown Health. “This AACVPR certification is a testament to our team's hard work and dedication in ensuring that individuals with pulmonary conditions receive the best possible care to enhance their quality of life." In 2018, AACVPR moved to an outcomes-based process with performance measurements that represent more meaningful outcomes. Therefore, AACVPR-certified programs are leaders in the cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation field because they offer the most advanced practices available and have proven track records of high-quality patient care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years. About Renown Health Renown Health is Nevada’s largest, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and northeast California. Renown is currently enrolling participants in a community-based genetic population health study, the Healthy Nevada Project®. About AACVPR Founded in 1985, the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the mission of reducing morbidity, mortality and disability from cardiovascular and pulmonary disease through education, prevention, rehabilitation, research and disease management. Dedicated Community Leader, Stephanie Kruse Honored by NV Hospital Association for Excellence and Improving Health of Nevada

Stephanie Kruse of Reno has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Trustee of the Year Award from the Nevada Hospital Association (NHA). Each year at the association’s annual meeting, the Nevada Hospital Association publicly acknowledges one trustee who exemplifies exceptional leadership professional excellence; outstanding achievements; innovative accomplishments and extraordinary compassion in caring for the community. “Stephanie’s effectiveness in advocating on behalf of hospitals, patients, and the health care system- as well as her personal connection and passion for improving the community’s overall health are what made her an excellent choice for this year’s award,” said Pat Kelly, NHA’s President & CEO. “Steph Kruse sets an inspiring example of someone who has dedicated her life to promoting public understanding of, and support for, the healthcare systems serving Nevada’s communities. She serves as an advocate for the provision of high quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services, resulting in healthier Nevada communities for all.” Kruse was nominated by Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO of Renown Health, who wrote, “The daughter of a nurse and a former nurse herself, Stephanie understands the importance of attracting and retaining nurses within our healthcare systems. This year, in addition to her four years of service on the Renown Health Foundation Board and serving as chair, Stephanie has made a significant and lasting contribution to our community by helping to train and grow the next generation of nurses and pediatricians; and expanding critical care facilities for babies, children and families in northern Nevada.” “I’m honored by Renown’s nomination and to be part of the mission of such an excellent organization,” said Kruse. “Supporting access to quality healthcare in our region is a top priority of mine and I hope that I can continue to convince others to do so as well.” Three of the major projects that Kruse has directed and completed on behalf of the Renown Health Foundation include: The Orvis School of Nursing and Renown Health partnership to provide nursing students with full ride scholarships to assist in building a sustainable nursing workforce in Northern Nevada. The Gerald “Jerry” Smith Academic-Practice Partnership established with the Renown Foundation now provides funding for up to 24 Orvis School of Nursing students each year. Scholarship recipients receive funding for educational expenses including tuition, fees, and books for the nursing program. Students can complete a paid apprenticeship at Renown Health and have a guaranteed job at the hospital following graduation and license obtainment. The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and Renown Health new three-year Pediatrics Residency Program. The inaugural cohort of pediatric residents started this summer. The new residency will help shape future pediatric practices – and fill a state and nation-wide physician specialist shortage. Over a three-year period, four newly trained physicians will be selected each year for a total complement of twelve residents. Formerly, UNR Med students interested in becoming pediatricians had to leave the area to complete their residency training elsewhere. The William N. Pennington Foundation, through the Renown Health Foundation, which Kruse leads as Board Chair, paved the way for this program, creating a pipeline of much-needed pediatricians for our state, especially in under-served and rural areas – to serve vulnerable children and families of Nevada with high-quality, affordable care. New Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units at Renown Regional Medical Center. To alleviate current capacity constraints and allow for expansion and new services, several aging facilities are being replaced and new patient care areas have been constructed at all Renown hospital campuses. Renown Regional Medical Center has expanded its pediatric critical care services. Women from throughout Nevada and California deliver their babies at Renown Regional Medical Center for the added specialty care and safety of a NICU. Renown also has a Neonatal Transport Team which brings infants with serious illnesses, injuries, or complications from outlying communities to the comfort of Renown's NICU. These spaces provide a nurturing, healing environment for babies and their families. These expansions were made possible through the collaborative efforts of Renown Health, the Renown Health Board, construction partners and the unwavering support of the community. A lifelong support of health and care and community Kruse graduated from nursing school and became a part-time Registered Nurse in a Sioux Falls, South Dakota nursing home while attending Augustana College to obtain a degree in journalism. As part of her journalism program, she completed an internship in the public relations department of a Sioux Falls hospital, and that led to her accepting a position as director of public relations at a sister hospital in Aberdeen, SD. In 1981, she moved to Reno to be the director of marketing for Saint Mary’s Hospital. Ten years later, Kruse graduated with her master’s in business administration from the University of Nevada, Reno. With not much in her pocket, she bought a Mac computer that helped launch her journey as a business owner. She called herself- appropriately- Stephanie Kruse and Associates (or SKA) and offered clients a strategic, thoughtful approach to their marketing communications. Since then, Kruse has grown SKA to KPS3, which is now a multi-million-dollar firm with over 50 staff members. KPS3 was named one of Inc's Fastest Growing Companies in the US and has also consistently been voted as a ‘Best Places to Work’ in northern Nevada. Kruse has several clients who have been with her and the company for all or most of the 30-year history. “Whether it’s for the community, a friend, family, a coworker, or someone in need, giving back has always been a part of Steph’s fabric,” says Greg Walaitis, Chief Development Officer of the Renown Health Foundation. “Stephanie brings strategic vision and is wholly dedicated to our community. Stephanie is a community asset, a compassionate leader and an exemplary Board member that is well deserving of this award. She holds a spot in her heart for organizations that address improved access to better health and human services, and we are fortunate to have her in Nevada.” In addition to her service at Renown Health Foundation Board, Kruse is active in many community organizations including the boards of High Sierra Industries/WARC, Access to Healthcare Network, the University of Nevada, Reno’s Foundation Board, and the Desert Research Institute.
