Position Purpose

The Surgical Technologist Specialty Rep functions as a service line lead technician and or as a clinical preference card coordinator to support in the day-to-day operations of the operating room department.

When functioning as a specialty rep, the technician is responsible for providing patient care. The specialty rep is responsible for rounding with providers of their service line and communicating surgeon specific needs and updates to surgeon preference cards to the clinical preference card coordinator.




Nature and Scope

This position serves a patient population of Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric. The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and families. This position provides technical skills as a member of the surgical team, communicating with supervisors, other surgery staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. The demands on this position are very dynamic because of rapid changes in medical procedures, technical knowledge, instrumentation, equipment, policies, procedures, and because of surgeon’s preferences in equipment, instruments, needles, and suture. This position has the freedom to decide the type of equipment and supplies required for the surgical care of the patient relative to the surgeon’s preference cards and knowledge of the procedure, and to identify any breakdown in aseptic technique and take appropriate action. This position ensures equipment is working properly before surgical procedure, cares for equipment after procedure, and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken.


This position provides patient care of technical nature. The technologist is responsible for supplying the operating room with the proper equipment and instrumentation that’s needed for specific surgery. During the procedure the primary responsibilities of the technologist is to maintain the sterility of the surgical field, to anticipate the needs of the surgeons, passing instruments in a timely fashion.


Under direct supervision the technologist may be asked to perform the following duties such as, but not limited to; sponge or suction, hold retractors or instrument placed by the surgeons, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, irrigation to the operative sight, cuts suture material, connects drains to the suction apparatus, applies dressings to the wound. Once the procedure is completed it is the responsibility of the technologist to care for the instrumentation, equipment and prepare for the following case.


This position will provide any assistance needed to expedite the room turnover thereby, providing optimum customer service to the surgeon, patient, anesthesiologist, and co-workers. In addition, this position is responsible for supply inventory, updating written procedures; meeting with company representatives with regards to new supplies and equipment and other duties required to ensure optimum utilization of the service.


This position in cooperation with the Operating Room Educator and management team provides training for staff in their respective service specialty. This position assists in coordinating staff assignments for their respective service specialty. Additional responsibilities may include maintaining the call schedule to provide continuous service.


When performing preference card duties, responsible for creating, updating, and maintenance of surgeon preference cards.

• This position will work closely with nursing, inventory personnel, and data management partner to accurately maintain inventory and equipment lists within the operative department.

• This position assists in the needs of surgeon(s) and inventory control.

• May assist in the selection of appropriate cards to be used based on surgery schedule.

• Will coordinate review sessions with various service line leadership and surgeons to ensure preference cards are reflective of any new changes or needs.

• Will assist in generating requests for new instruments and equipment to be added to system.

• Research new as well as existing items with the help of inventory personnel to accurately maintain the preference card data base.

• Use Epic reports to review specific procedures and related cards and content on a regular basis.

• Meet routinely with OR nursing manager and OR administration to evaluate changes and opportunities for cost savings.

• Generate monthly and quarterly reports to show supply usage, cost, preference cards created and deactivated.

Minimum Qualifications
Requirements - Required and/or Preferred




Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.


Minimum one year as an O.R. Technician required.




Current BLS certification by the American Heart Association standards required

Certification of surgical technologists preferred

Surgical First Assistant: Surgical Technologist may perform in the capacity of a first assist if he or she is a graduate of an surgical assistant first assistant program that included didactic and supervised clinical practice, is based on The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting requirements in 200201, 400201, 200340


If uncertified, incumbent is required to complete at least 15 hours of continuing education concerning the practice of surgical technology upon completion of first year of employment and on an annual basis thereafter. If certified, incumbent must maintain minimum qualifications in order to maintain certification.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
