Physicians join Renown’s Conrad Breast Center to support expansion of complete breast cancer care in northern Nevada

Renown Health’s William N. Pennington Cancer Institute is expanding access to specialized breast cancer care with the addition of two breast surgical oncologists, Abigail Madans, DO and C. John Michet, MD. Both surgeons join Michelle Chu, MD, FACS Director of Breast Surgical Oncology at Renown Health. Together, the three physicians will focus exclusively on breast surgical care at Renown, strengthening the multidisciplinary team providing coordinated cancer care for patients across the region.

Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care

Part of the Pennington Cancer Institute, the Conrad Breast Center provides advanced imaging and diagnostics, genetic counseling, breast surgery, medical oncology, infusion services and access to clinical trials, all under one roof. Nurse navigation, wellness programs and survivorship services further support patients throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

“Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, and its incidence rate steadily increases every year,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO, Renown Health. “Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis brings uncertainty for patients and their families. At Renown, we believe every patient deserves access to exceptional care, experienced specialists and the resources they need close to home. That commitment drives us to recruit exceptional physicians, invest in leading-edge technology and continually advance the cancer care available in our community.”

Since opening in May 2025, the Conrad Breast Center has supported more than 3,600 patient appointments, completed more than 12,700 breast imaging exams, including mammograms and hosted more than 500 wellness activities. The center brings breast cancer specialists and services together in one location to support earlier detection, timely treatment and a more coordinated patient experience.

“The Conrad Breast Center has created a strong foundation for coordinated, patient-centered breast cancer care and adding two more breast surgical oncologists allows us to build on that foundation,” said Christopher Evans, MD, FACS, Interim Director, Pennington Cancer Institute and Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery at Renown Health and UNR Med. “Breast surgical oncologists receive advanced training in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of breast cancer. Through a rigorous board certification process, they demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and expertise dedicated specifically to caring for patients with breast cancer. We are proud to be joined by Drs. Madans and Michet in providing personalized patient care focused on better outcomes and quality of life.”

Welcoming Dr. Madans

Dr. Madans is a fellowship-trained, board-certified breast surgical oncologist and general surgeon. She completed her breast surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Most recently, she served as program director for the General Surgery Residency at Hennepin Healthcare, where she led quality improvement initiatives and community education and outreach efforts aimed at increasing breast cancer screening rates.

“Breast cancer care is about more than treating a diagnosis. It’s about helping patients understand their options and feel supported through every step of their care,” Dr. Madans said. “I look forward to working alongside the team at the Conrad Breast Center at Renown to provide personalized surgical care and help each patient achieve the best possible outcome.”

Welcoming Dr. Michet

Dr. C. John Michet is a fellowship-trained, board-certified breast surgical oncologist with a research focus on improving breast cancer outcomes. He completed his fellowship at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and has contributed to multiple research projects and publications examining surgical approaches and treatments for early-stage breast cancer.

“I am honored to join the multidisciplinary team at Renown's Conrad Breast Center and help expand access to comprehensive breast cancer care,” Dr. Michet said. “Bringing advanced imaging and diagnostics, surgery, treatment, research and supportive wellness services together in one location creates a more connected experience for patients. That comprehensive approach is one of the things that drew me to Renown.”

The addition of Drs. Madans and Michet strengthens the team of specialists at the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program at the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute, supporting patients at every stage of breast cancer care, from diagnosis and treatment through recovery and survivorship.

Renown's 2027-2029 Community Health Implementation Strategy & Funding Opportunities

Today, Renown Health released its 2027-2029 Community Health Implementation Strategy, outlining how the health system will work alongside community partners to address the most pressing health needs identified through the 2026 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Additionally, applications are now open for Renown's 2027 grant cycle. As northern Nevada's largest independent, locally owned not-for-profit academic health system, Renown Health reinvests 100% of its profits back into programs, services and partnerships that improve community health. "The Community Health Needs Assessment helped us understand where our community faces the greatest challenges and opportunities," said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Renown Health. "Our implementation strategy represents our commitment to action. Through collaboration, investment and measurable goals, we will continue working alongside community partners to improve health outcomes across northern Nevada. As a not-for-profit academic health system, this work is imperative to our commitment to improving our community's health and ensuring our resources are directed toward areas of greatest need.” The three-year strategy focuses on four priority areas identified through the CHNA: mental health, access to health services, economic stability, and health risk behaviors and early detection. To support implementation of these priorities, Renown is opening applications for community funding opportunities designed to advance local solutions to identified health needs. The 2027-2029 Community Health implementation strategy is available here.

How are wait times calculated?

Our estimated ER wait times reflect the average time from check-in to being seen by a medical professional during triage, where patients are prioritized based on the severity of their condition.
