A Heart for Care

Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health is the region’s destination for cardiothoracic surgery.
With more than 50 cardiovascular physicians and advanced practice providers offering 13 cardiovascular specialties in 10 locations, Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health is a singular destination for advanced cardiology care. Cardiothoracic surgery is no exception, as experienced providers use the latest technology to treat a range of heart conditions.
“Renown Health has the best trained cardiac surgeons and cardiac anesthesiologists in the region,” says Suresh Raman, MD, cardiac anesthesiologist at Renown Health. “We pride ourselves in taking excellent care of patients, staying up to date with current medical therapies and treatments, and caring for our Reno community.”
Advanced Procedures, Advanced Care Plans
The comprehensive cardiac surgery program specializes in complex procedures, including:
- Aortic valve replacement
- Ascending aortic or arch aneurysm repairs
- Complex aortic surgeries and repairs
- Complex mitral valve repairs
- Coronary artery bypass grafting
- Mitral valve replacement
- Tricuspid valve repairs and replacements
The team averages a high volume of procedures, performing 280 open-heart surgeries in 2022.
“Patients want a team that is skilled at performing their specific surgery over and over again,” Dr. Raman says. “We also pride ourselves in keeping up with modern medical care, including incorporating practices involved in Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery.”
However, every patient is assessed individually to determine whether surgery is necessary and which procedure is best suited for the specifics of the condition.
“We always place multidisciplinary planning for treatment of cardiac disease at the forefront of everything we do, because every patient is different,” says Athan Roumanas, MD, medical director of Cardiothoracic Surgery and co-director of the Structural Heart Program at Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health. “For instance, in the case of aortic stenosis, such an approach is critical to determine if surgical aortic valve replacement or minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement is optimal.”
Renown Health also provides surveillance for aneurysms smaller than the surgical threshold to ensure prompt referral to cardiac surgery if the aneurysm increases in size.
“Renown Health is committed to providing the surgical expertise and technology for treatment of complex cardiac disease with a multidisciplinary approach,” Dr. Roumanas says.
