Study Information

Summary / Purpose

The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of using wide local excision (WLE) alone to the usual treatment, using WLE plus sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy. This study will help the study doctors find out if this different approach is just as effective as the usual approach.

Who Can Participate

Eligibility Criteria:

Adults 75+ years of age
Must have newly diagnosed primary cutaneous melanoma with wide local excision (WLE) and sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy indicated
No active infection

What's Involved

Participation in the study will include:

Random assignment to receive either the usual surgery, which is a wide local excision plus a sentinel lymph node biopsy, or a wide local excision alone
Monitoring of the lymph node area with ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scans
Completing questionnaires about your well-being and quality of life
