Molmenti (EPM) completed college and medical school at Boston University (MMEDIC early admission program, Summa Cum Laude). Member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He did his residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital - Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and his fellowship in adult and pediatric abdominal organ transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh. Post fellowship he joined Baylor University Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. While in Texas, he performed adult and pediatric liver transplants and adult kidney transplants. EPM then was recruited by The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director of Kidney/Pancreas Transplantation. There he obtained his MBA degree. Prior to joining Hofstra-Northwell, he was Professor of Surgery and Director of Abdominal Transplantation at the University of Arizona. In Arizona, he re-built the adult and pediatric liver programs, the adult and pediatric kidney programs, and the adult pancreas program. At Northwell Health, EPM founded the adult (2007) and pediatric (2016) kidney transplant programs. During his leadership, the adult kidney transplant program was rated No. 1 in the United States in 2022 for 1-year survival of transplant recipients (transplants from July 2018 to December 2020), and in 2024 for both 90-day patient survival and 3-year living-donor transplant survival (transplants from January 2021 to June 2023) by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). In 2024 EPM was named Chief of Transplantation and Executive Director of the Transplant Institute at Renown Health (where he established a new Transplant Program in Reno, Nevada) and Executive Vice President and Director of the Nevada Transplant Institute (encompassing the entire state of Nevada). He is also Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Public Health. In 2025 he completed Harvard Medical School’s AI in Healthcare Executive Education Program. Innovation / Patents: In The Lancet, EPM illustrated a new approach to directed organ donation and incompatible kidney chains. In The Lancet Regional Health, he defined a call for equity in transplantation. Previously he had described the syndromic incidence of ovarian carcinoma after liver transplantation in patients with anteceding breast cancer, as well as a vascular reconstruction technique (Molmenti technique). Through his membership in the UNOS National Kidney Transplantation Committee he contributed to the mandated re-design of the kidney allocation system in the US. He was also involved in expanding organ donation in New York State. EPM is a named inventor/co-inventor in multiple patents/patent applications. At Northwell Health, EPM founded the multi-disciplinary Division of Surgical Innovation (2019) across 24 hospitals, of which he was System Chief. Northwell Health in collaboration with i360medical, invested $2.5 million in the development of one of EPM’s surgical devices (2019). EPM is a strategic advisor for Vivalyx and a member of the Advisory Boards of Project Odin’s Eye and the Atria Academy of Sciences and Medicine. He also consulted for Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies. Publications - Books: EPM authored over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and chapters, having published in the New Engl J Med, Lancet, Proc Natl Acad Sci, J Biol Chem, J Clin Invest, J Exp Med, J Immunol, Am J Transplant, Ann Surg, J Am Coll Surg, J Pediatr Surg, J Surg Res, Langenbecks Arch Surg, Liver Transpl, Pediatr Transplant, Radiology, Sci Rep, Surgery, and Transplantation. Leadership: EPM is a member of the: American Society of Transplant Surgeons (served on the Reimbursement Committee, Bylaws Committee, and Program, Publications & Postgraduate Course Committee), the American College of Surgeons (he received the Faculty Research Fellowship), the Nevada Donor Network Advisory Board, the Emergency Preparedness Committee of Renown Regional Medical Center/Renown Health, and Project Odin’s Eye/TOPGUN (United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program). Teaching – Research: EPM’s research career has sought to build portfolios that integrate basic science, translational innovation, and clinical outcomes—with the ultimate aim of improving survival, enhancing quality of life, and reducing health disparities. His philosophy is to cultivate a team-science environment where clinician-scientists, researchers, residents, and students collaborate across disciplines. This includes securing NIH and private funding, fostering industry partnerships, and building robust mentorship pipelines to ensure sustainability. He has a special interest in expanding organ donation and in AI applied to Health Care. During his residency, he dedicated three years to basic science research (received the Abbott Laboratories Research Fellowship of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America), ranked in the top 1% of US surgery residents (ABSITE). Also during this time he received multiple teaching awards. During his fellowship, he received Young Investigator Awards at the First Joint Annual Meeting of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons / American Society of Transplantation and at the XVII World Congress of The Transplantation Society. While at Johns Hopkins, he was awarded a Faculty Research Fellowship by the American College of Surgeons as well as the Bernard Amos Young Investigator Immunology Award for his work on proteomic characterization of organ transplant rejection. At Northwell EPM promoted an Annual Department Research Day, Bioskills Sessions, Core Competency Days, Mock Board Exams, and Mentoring and Professionalism in Training (MAP-IT) programs designed to incorporate humanism as a core value in the development of health professionals. EPM was a founding member of several committees at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, held professorships in Surgery, Medicine, and Pediatrics, and is a member of its Academy of Medical Educators. He is currently Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Public Health. EPM was inducted into the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators of the American College of Surgeons. Reviewer: EPM served as ad-hoc scientific reviewer for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health and was an invited member of the Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation Research Committee (AITRC) NIH – NIAID. He is a former member of the Editorial Boards of the journals Transplantation and International Journal of Angiology and a reviewer for over forty academic publications in his specialty.
