Navigating What Comes Next After a Breast Cancer Diagnosis

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate what comes next alone. Dr. C. John Michet, a Breast Surgical Oncologist at Renown Health, joined Channel 11's ARC Reno segment to share practical steps to help you or a loved one navigate a breast cancer diagnosis. Read more below or watch the segment here.

What to Do After Receiving a Breast Cancer Diagnosis

First, take a breath. If you or a loved one has received a cancer diagnosis, please allow yourself time to process the news and remember that your care team will help guide you through the next steps.

Bring Someone You Trust to Appointments

Consider bringing family member or friend to appointments. A loved one can provide emotional support. They can also take notes and help you remember important details where there is a lot of information to absorb.

Gather Your Medical Records and Stay Organized

Before your first appointment with a specialist, gather copies of your biopsy results, imaging reports and imaging files. Having these records available can help your care team understand what is already known and determine whether additional information or testing is needed.

You may be able to access records through tools such as MyChart or request printed copies. Keep your records, provider names and phone numbers together in a folder or another system that works for you. Ask who your main point of contact is so you know whom to reach when questions come up.

Write Down Your Questions

It can be difficult to remember every question you want to ask during an appointment. Writing them down beforehand can help you make the most of your time with your care team.

Dr. Michet recommends thinking about your questions in three areas:

  • What do we know? What type of breast cancer do I have?
  • What do we still need to learn? Do I need additional testing?
  • What happens next? What are my treatment options?

Know That You Are Not Alone: Cancer Care Is a Team Effort

Depending on your individual care and treatment needs, you may see several specialists throughout your journey, including a breast surgeon, medical oncologist, wellness oncologist or radiation oncologist.

The Conrad Breast Center at Renown South Meadows Specialty Center brings all aspects of breast care together in one thoughtfully designed space. From diagnosis to treatment and wellness, our team is here to support you with expert care and added comfort — every step of the way. Learn more here.
