What Ozempic and Similar Drugs Could Mean for Addiction Treatment

A provider at Renown Health speaks with a bariatric patient in an exam room.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, commonly known as GLP-1RA medications or GLP-1s, are now some of the most popular weight loss aids across the country. They are more commonly known by their brand names: Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus, Trulicity and more.

Why Non-Diabetics Are Turning to GLP-1 Drugs

These drugs work by slowing down the emptying of the stomach and stimulating insulin production, hence why they are ordinarily prescribed to adults with type 2 diabetes. GLP-1s help promote weight loss which, while beneficial for patients managing their diabetes, has swept the nation with its effectiveness in treating obesity, even for those who are not diabetic.

Given the popularity of these medications, experts are researching how GLP-1s impact different patient populations, including people in recovery from addiction. Here’s what we know so far:

  • Several short-term studies show a positive effect of GLP-1 drugs on the brain’s reward pathways.
  • According to the studies, these drugs seem to reduce the pleasurable and reinforcing effects of alcohol and opioid use. This means that those who use GLP-1s may not experience the same “high,” which could make relapse less likely.
  • While not yet fully understood, researchers involved in these studies believe GLP-1 medications may reduce dopamine release—a chemical in the brain tied to feelings of pleasure and reward. Less dopamine means that the brain doesn’t respond as strongly to substances like alcohol or opioids, potentially making them less addictive.
  • GLP-1s may also help by calming the body’s stress response and reducing cravings or drug-seeking behaviors, especially in people with a history of substance abuse.

A New Possibility in Addiction Treatment

These early results suggest GLP-1 medications could be a promising tool in helping treat addiction. It is important to note, however, that more research and testing is needed on this subject.

How are wait times calculated?

Our estimated ER wait times reflect the average time from check-in to being seen by a medical professional during triage, where patients are prioritized based on the severity of their condition.
