The Healthy Lifestyles Clinic at Renown Children’s Hospital helps children and families build healthier futures by addressing the complex challenges of childhood weight-related health challenges. Led by Dr. Steven Shane, the clinic offers a comprehensive, one-stop program where lifestyle is used as a powerful form of treatment.

Each care plan focuses on the four pillars of health:

  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Sleep
  • Emotional well-being

Children are referred to the clinic by their primary care provider or pediatric specialist. Once here, families work closely with Dr. Shane and a team of experts — including a dietitian, a psychologist and pediatric subspecialists — who provide personalized, supportive care.

Community Collaboration and Education

Community collaboration is a key part of the program. Renown works with local organizations like Urban Roots and ReDirect Athletics to offer the Sierra Nevada Fit program, which provides gardening, cooking and physical activity education for kids and families.

Support for Long-Term Health

At the Healthy Lifestyles Clinic, we meet children and families where they are by helping them develop lifelong habits for healthier living.

  • Weight management medications are offered to patients in certain clinical situations.
  • Treatment success is measured by behavioral goals, Body Mass Index (BMI), and body composition — but also by improved confidence and family wellness.
