Celebrating One Year of Expanded Access to Clinical Services to Keep Care Local

Renown South Meadows Medical Center is celebrating an exciting milestone, one year of expanding access to clinical services and strengthening a network of physicians and providers with the addition of the Specialty Care Center. This facility, which opened on Jan. 27, 2025, was designed to meet the needs of a growing community, offering expanded access to essential and advanced care, and providing highly reliable care and an exceptional experience.

Breaking ground in the spring of 2022, the Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center rose from vision to reality through the dedication of the Renown team, and over 1,000 skilled local professionals investing 616,000 work hours. Now, the 121,000-square-foot space offers expanded imaging, advanced surgical suites, comprehensive lab services, leading-edge cardiac care and comprehensive breast health services at the Conrad Breast Center. Today marks not only the Specialty Care Center’s first anniversary but also six months of innovation at the Conrad Breast Center — a testament to progress and possibility.

“As the only locally governed, charitable, not-for-profit, academic health system serving northern Nevada, we are proud to invest 100% of our proceeds in expertise, services and facilities like Renown South Meadows Medical Center and the new Specialty Care Center, to benefit our community,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO, Renown Health. “Driven by the unwavering commitment of our patients, our partners and our team, this beautiful, state-of-the-art facility epitomizes Renown’s commitment to providing world class care, close to home.”

“Renown Health is committed to enhancing and expanding services at Renown South Meadows Medical Center, with growth extending beyond the Specialty Care Center. The main South Meadows Medical Center has also undergone significant upgrades, with even more projects on the horizon, each dedicated toward a People First care approach, improving access and shaping the future of health in our region,” says Sam Weller, MHPA, CEO of Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Renown Rehabilitation Hospital.

The Impact of the Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center

One year in, the Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center isn’t just a new building, it’s proof of Renown’s promise to grow with our community, create a healthier future and bring essential and advanced care closer to home.

Enhanced Surgical Capabilities Include:

  • 1,360 surgeries performed in the new surgery center, expanding access to care in a modern, patient-centered environment designed to support patient outcomes and recovery.
  • The expansion of operating capacity increased surgical volume across the health system, with a 13.5% increase at Renown South Meadows and a 3.5% increase at Renown Regional Medical Center in 2025, helping create additional capacity to meet the needs of patients and surgeons in our community.
  • Expanded surgical services and operating areas have also created new opportunities for medical and nursing students interested in exploring future healthcare careers.

Advanced Cardiac Care Include:

  • 284 procedures completed for patients in the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology lab, providing timely cardiac care.
  • 7,400 patient appointments with Renown Cardiology at Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center.
  • The Conrad Breast Center opened on May 28 and is a continuation of the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute at Renown, seamlessly coordinating advanced genetic counseling, breast imaging, diagnostics, breast medical oncology, breast surgical infusion, clinical research, wellness, and survivorship services together in one convenient location. Comprehensive breast health support included;
  • Between May and August 2025; 3,565 breast imaging procedures, 1,006 medical oncology patient appointments and 1,026 infusion treatments were performed at the Conrad Breast Center, a dedicated patient-centered space designed to support patients at every stage of their breast health journey.
  • During the same period, 340 patients and survivors participated in Renown's Oncology Wellness Program, located at the Conrad Breast Center and established by Dr. Madeline Hardacre, reinforcing Renown's commitment to whole-person cancer and wellness care beyond treatment alone.

The Impact of Expansion Projects at Renown South Meadows

  • 2,397 procedures performed by the team at the new South Meadows Outpatient Interventional Radiology location, creating expanded capacity for patients at Renown Regional Medical Center.
  • 20,104 prescriptions dispensed and 1,694 vaccines administered at Renown Pharmacy - South Meadows.
  • Renown South Meadows expanded its outpatient laboratory services, extended weekend hours, increased capacity and streamlined operations to better accommodate rising customer demand. The lab now serves an average of 90–100 patients daily and performed 65,000 tests in 2025.
  • An average of 320 guests per day were served in the new kitchen and dining facilities, totaling 65,444 guests and employees served in 2025.

“Having advanced imaging, expanded surgical access, and comprehensive cardiac and breast health services under one roof has transformed how we care for patients and helped create a healthier future,” said Jenn Fleiner, Chief Nursing Officer at Renown South Meadows Medical Center. “Reduced delays, increased access and improved coordination help our patients receive the care they need, closer to home. It’s such a pleasure to be here in our community, serving friends and neighbors.”

“Looking ahead, Renown South Meadows will continue to expand services that bring specialized care, closer to home,” says Sam Weller. “Renown South Meadows will soon offer advanced cardiac diagnostics, including technology to offer cardiac ultrasounds, and echocardiography, a minimally invasive tool to produce moving pictures of the heart. In addition, low-impact vein ablation procedures will be offered to treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. We will continue to grow the Renown South Meadows campus by expanding access to essential and advanced care, investing in innovation as we remain focused on meeting the evolving needs of our region and building a healthier future for Nevada.”

Renown Health Expands Access to Advanced Deep Brain Stimulation Care

Renown Health is expanding access to advanced neurological care with the availability of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery at the Renown Institute for Neurosciences, bringing one of the most sophisticated treatments for movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, closer to home for patients across northern Nevada. “The availability of Deep Brain Stimulation at Renown represents a significant step forward in the level of neurological care we can provide locally,” said Chris Nicholas, MHA, FACHE, CEO, Renown Regional Medical Center and COO, Renown Health. “DBS is a highly specialized therapy that requires advanced technology, surgical expertise and a coordinated care team. By bringing this treatment closer to home, we’re improving access to essential and advanced care options while helping patients achieve better outcomes and quality of life.” DBS is used to help manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia; a neurological movement disorder causing involuntary, sustained or repetitive muscle contractions, leading to twisting movements, abnormal postures and sometimes pain, affecting one muscle or the whole body, when medications alone are no longer effective. DBS uses targeted electrical impulses delivered to specific areas of the brain to help regulate abnormal neurological signals. For many patients with movement disorders, DBS can significantly improve symptoms, restore independence and enhance quality of life. This milestone was made possible in part through the generosity of eight local foundations and individual donors, coordinated by the Renown Health Foundation. Contributions ranged from $5,000 to $333,000, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing specialized care in the region. “Philanthropic support played a critical role in making Deep Brain Stimulation available at Renown. Investments from local foundations and individual donors helped fund the advanced technology and infrastructure required to launch this highly specialized program,” said Gregory Walaitis, MEd, Chief Development Officer at Renown Health. “Their generosity is directly expanding access to leading-edge neurological care, allowing patients in our region to receive complex, life-changing treatment close to home and reinforcing Renown’s commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care.”
