Earning its third five-year accreditation, Renown's neuro-diagnostic lab remains Nevada's only accredited ABRET facility.

The Renown Institute for Neurosciences is pleased to announce that the neuro-diagnostic lab at Renown Regional Medical Center has been re-accredited by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET). ABRET’s lab accreditation process evaluates technical standards, the quality of a laboratory’s output, and lab management.

“Renown Health is a leader and a destination for health in treating neurological disorders and advancing innovations in neurology. The specialists at the Renown Institute for Neurosciences provide comprehensive brain, nerve and surgical support along with a full range of diagnostic and additional procedures and a disease-specific, patient-focused approach to care,” says Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, FACHE, President and CEO, Renown Health. “This prestigious honor from ABRET means Renown’s Electroencephalogram (EEG) Laboratory has met strict standards and is recognized as a place where patients and physicians can confidently receive quality diagnostics.”

“In addition to re-accreditation from ABRET, the Institute for Neurosciences has earned a Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission and offers advanced treatment options including t-PA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator) and biplane angiography. The Level III accredited Epilepsy laboratory implements some of the newest treatments available,” said Renown’s Chief Medical Officer, Paul Sierzenski, MD, MSHQS, CPE, FACEP. “Renown patients also have access to the most promising new therapies through national clinical trials, which have been shown to significantly improve patients’ health and well-being.”

“I am proud to recognize our dedicated team of caregivers for their continued passion and excellence in maintaining the highest standards in patient care,” said Renown Institute for Neurosciences’ Division Chief, Dr. Rolando Ania. “It is all thanks to their tremendous efforts that we remain the only ABRET accredited laboratory, as well as the only nationally accredited epilepsy center (NAEC Level III), in the state of Nevada.”

Using a collaborative approach, specialists at the Renown Institute for Neurosciences use leading-edge diagnostic tools to identify neurological conditions and treat patients with the most effective techniques available.

What is a Neuro-diagnostic Lab?

A neuro-diagnostic lab allows care teams the technology to evaluate how a patient’s peripheral, autonomic, and central nervous systems function, and aid in diagnosing and treating conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and other diseases of the nervous system.

What is an Electroencephalogram (EEG)?

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of the brain. During the test, special sensors called electrodes are attached to the patient’s head and hooked by wires to a computer. The computer then records the brain’s electrical activity on the screen.

Renown’s Institute for Heart & Vascular Health, located at both Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center, is known for its leading-edge treatments, advanced surgical techniques, and comprehensive care for patients with heart and vascular conditions. In their announcement, Becker’s highlighted that Renown Health (Reno, Nev.) was named once again by U.S. News & World Report as the top heart center in the state of Nevada. The Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health serves over 69,000 patients in the Mountain West, offering care across 11 cardiovascular specialties via more than 50 cardiovascular specialists. Specialties include general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, structural heart, women’s heart, heart failure management and cardiac rehabilitation. All of these are supported by advanced diagnostics and minimally invasive therapies. The institute’s physicians, nurses and other clinicians, and specially trained support team all maintain a 4.9/5-star patient rating, underscoring strong patient satisfaction and community trust. Renown Health’s structural heart team has performed approximately 130 transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures, exceeding the national averages for innovative valve therapies. The institute continues to expand access to vital and essential services, including the region’s first extracorporeal membrane oxygenation program to support critically ill heart and lung patients. In addition to heart care, the vascular medicine and anticoagulation services include diagnosis and treatment for conditions affecting blood flow, as well as personalized medication management and monitoring to reduce risks of stroke, heart attack and clotting complications. With advanced testing, same-day monitoring, and coordinated care across specialties, the Renown team helps patients achieve better circulation and long-term heart health. Anna Falvey of Becker's announced its list of 100 Hospitals & Health Systems with Great Heart Programs, stating, “These hospitals and health systems are known for their exceptional cardiovascular care, strong patient outcomes and their use of life-saving technologies. These heart programs also lead the way in cardiology research, driving discoveries that are shaping and advancing the field.” “We are proud to be the region’s leader for cardiac health, heart and vascular care with the most advanced medical, surgical and minimally invasive specialty care, technology and research,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO of Renown Health. “On behalf of the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health team, our patients and our community, we are humbled to be nationally recognized for the cardiovascular care we provide and to be considered a destination for heart care.” Many of the institutions on this list consistently earn top honors from U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, Healthgrades and other respected ranking organizations. Dedicated to clinical excellence and continuous growth, they deliver world-class heart care to thousands of patients each year while expanding and strengthening their cardiovascular services. “Being honored as a top-tier heart and vascular program is a testament to what’s possible when exceptional people work together with a shared commitment to patients,” said Bradley C. Renown Health Expands Access to Advanced Deep Brain Stimulation Care

Renown Health is expanding access to advanced neurological care with the availability of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery at the Renown Institute for Neurosciences, bringing one of the most sophisticated treatments for movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, closer to home for patients across northern Nevada. “The availability of Deep Brain Stimulation at Renown represents a significant step forward in the level of neurological care we can provide locally,” said Chris Nicholas, MHA, FACHE, CEO, Renown Regional Medical Center and COO, Renown Health. “DBS is a highly specialized therapy that requires advanced technology, surgical expertise and a coordinated care team. By bringing this treatment closer to home, we’re improving access to essential and advanced care options while helping patients achieve better outcomes and quality of life.” DBS is used to help manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia; a neurological movement disorder causing involuntary, sustained or repetitive muscle contractions, leading to twisting movements, abnormal postures and sometimes pain, affecting one muscle or the whole body, when medications alone are no longer effective. DBS uses targeted electrical impulses delivered to specific areas of the brain to help regulate abnormal neurological signals. For many patients with movement disorders, DBS can significantly improve symptoms, restore independence and enhance quality of life. This milestone was made possible in part through the generosity of eight local foundations and individual donors, coordinated by the Renown Health Foundation. Contributions ranged from $5,000 to $333,000, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing specialized care in the region. “Philanthropic support played a critical role in making Deep Brain Stimulation available at Renown. Investments from local foundations and individual donors helped fund the advanced technology and infrastructure required to launch this highly specialized program,” said Gregory Walaitis, MEd, Chief Development Officer at Renown Health. “Their generosity is directly expanding access to leading-edge neurological care, allowing patients in our region to receive complex, life-changing treatment close to home and reinforcing Renown’s commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care.”
