Cardiology Access Takes a Major Step Forward

New cardiology clinic and treatment spaces allow specialists to care for more patients at the Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center.
Expanding Specialty Services
Bringing more heart care, especially specialty services, to South Reno has long been a priority for Renown Health. This became a reality with the opening of a new cardiology clinic on the third floor of the Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center located on the campus of Renown South Meadows Medical Center.
“Our previous clinic space, in the nearby medical office building, was relatively limited,” says Bradley Nelson, MD, MBA, director of cardiovascular services and division chief of cardiology at Renown Health. “The new location in the Specialty Care Center is significantly larger and allows us to place more providers there. Now, more patients can stay in South Reno for care instead of driving to Renown Regional Medical Center.”
Previously, only general cardiologists were available at Renown South Meadows Medical Center.
At the new clinic, however, patients can have consultations with:
- General cardiologists
- Interventional cardiologists
- Electrophysiologists
Twice the Treatment Space
In addition to the third-floor cardiology clinic, the Specialty Care Center features two new, state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs on the ground floor.
One lab is dedicated to interventional cardiology.
Interventional cardiologist Jad Al Danaf, MD, MPH, co-director of the ECMO Program at Renown Health and assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, led the expansion of this service to South Reno.
“Expanding our interventional cardiology services to the Specialty Care Center provides patients with personalized, timely and minimally invasive procedures, such as coronary angioplasty and stenting, and access to innovative cardiovascular treatments and diagnostic tools,” Dr. Al Danaf says.
“These factors lead to improved cardiovascular outcomes.”
The second cardiac catheterization lab hosts electrophysiology procedures.
Led by electrophysiologist Shining Sun, MD, these services include:
- Atrial fibrillation ablations
- Pacemaker implantations
- Defibrillator implantations
A Seamless Ambulatory Experience
In a hospital setting, elective cardiac catheterization patients may face delays due to emergent cases like heart attacks.
That is not the case at the new cardiac catheterization labs at Renown South Meadows Specialty Care Center.
“The new cardiac catheterization labs provide additional capacity for ambulatory patients because we don’t treat hospitalized patients there,” says Bradley Nelson, MD, MBA, director of cardiovascular services and division chief of cardiology at Renown Health.
“We provide a seamless ambulatory experience for patients to have same-day procedures, such as diagnostic heart catheterizations, noncomplex stenting procedures, ablations and pacemaker implantations.”
