Neuromuscular conditions affect how the brain, nerves and muscles work together. These disorders can impact movement, strength, coordination and daily activities.

Our pediatric team cares for children with a wide range of neuromuscular conditions, including cerebral palsy and other complex movement disorders. We focus on improving mobility, comfort and independence at every stage of growth.

Cerebral Palsy (CP)

Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects a child’s ability to control their muscles.

It happens when there is damage or abnormal development in the parts of the brain that control movement and coordination. The muscles and spinal cord are usually normal, but the brain sends incorrect signals. This can cause stiffness, tight muscles, weakness or difficulty with balance and coordination.

CP most often begins before birth, but it can also occur during birth or early childhood.

Early signs may include:

  • Delays in rolling over, sitting, crawling or walking
  • Stiff or floppy muscle tone
  • Poor coordination or balance

Cerebral palsy can range from mild to severe. Some children walk on their own. Others may use braces, walkers or wheelchairs for support.

Cerebral palsy can also affect other areas of a child’s health. Some children may experience:

  • Learning or developmental delays
  • Seizures
  • Vision or hearing problems
  • Scoliosis (curvature of the spine)
  • Joint tightness (contractures)
  • Hip problems

Every child is different. Care plans are tailored to each child’s needs.

Treatment and Support

There is no cure for cerebral palsy, but the condition does not get worse over time. Early treatment can make a big difference.

Care may include:

  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Bracing and mobility devices
  • Medications to reduce muscle tightness
  • Surgical procedures when needed

Our goal is to improve movement, reduce pain and help children reach their fullest potential.

ER Wait Times

How are wait times calculated?

Our estimated ER wait times reflect the average time from check-in to being seen by a medical professional during triage, where patients are prioritized based on the severity of their condition.
